My only advice would be stop using a casing layer, it’s just one more thing to get contaminated and it’s not really essential for cubes.

When you apply a casing layer you're suppose to apply it at the time of spawning to the substrate that way it colonizes with its underlining substrate.

If you apply it after full colonization of the bulk material then it will just sit wet ontop of the substrate which is a breeding ground for mold.

I'd recommend to post pictures of the situation as soon as there is something unusual happening.

I case at 96-99% colonization with peat/verm, if I'm late and its already fully colonized and/or already knotting then a thin plain verm layer.

By now it most likely turned green already, before that you could have spooned the casing out and hoped to get a full flush before the green devil grows back, now tho I'd aswell throw the thing out.

How did you prep your casing ?

I'm just going to chime in and say - stop opening and checking and introducing to open air often while it's colonizing the bulk substrate after you spawn.  I know it's hard to be patient and not check it all the time. That Trich/green contam is now out and about in your grow area and likely to continue contaminating your other newly spawned substrates or cakes.

DickMoby gives some great casing information and yes, straight verm casing is an easy way to case and keep moisture and your microenvironment in good shape when you put to fruiting conditions.

It sucks to get the green but handling and opening to check on them can do more harm then good.  I'd trash them outside (maybe you'll get an outdoor surprise) and bleach/clean/disinfect your grow chamber or grow room top to bottom before birthing or spawning anything fresh.

I apologize if I'm coming off harsh, but want to point out that you'll continue to carry that Trich contam into the future unless you dump those and practice cleaner methods during spawning and into fruiting.

I almost felt bad for saying trash it so quickly, but my sentiment was that thing shouldn't have gotten that far around the other stuff. Also if that much is showing, the sub is most likely trash and a ticking time bomb.

It's the worse thing with this hobby - getting that far along in the process then having to trash it.  My first reaction was dump/trash it too.  Pain now or continued problems into the future if those trich spores are blowing all around non stop.

I realized it’s also much easier to say trash it. But the heartbreak of a first grow going bad is something else. I don’t know if this was a first grow, but it is a horrible thought.

Agree with you there Misfit and I also hope it wasn't a first time grow.
