I feel this is something I should share here… I’m not sure if others have stated it yet or not but other ppl in the OMC have been using a thick, 2” compressed layer (2” after compression) of coir/verm on top of PE subs and getting the same results as using the 1” peat casing. I’ve seen enough results that it’s worth sharing and seems to work great… it’s definitely something I’ll be trying here soon.

Getting my PE tubs fired back up!

Got 6 qts of an untested PE clone from last December that I dried out on grain and resurrected about to do their thing


Knocked up 4 qts of some MS PE and 2 qts of another resurrected PE clone from last December (pec4)… this culture


I also succeeded in resurrecting the pec2 culture from last year but it was a lot slower to get going so I’m worried it’s tired but I will be checking that guy back out in the near future.. depending on how the pec3 culture performs, I’m going to have the pec4 be the workhorse. I plan on taking a few more clones from the ms tubs too so I’ll have lots to choose from at any time.

Faht, sorry to post here. One side is lagging behind a bit and I keep patching the more aggressive side. Keep patching or let it be?

Is the wedge indicative of contam like agar wedging?

It’s one of the 16qt tubs from the op.. I use 2 qts of spawn to 4 qts bulk

@rocky.. I’d just move some of that uncolonized casing over from the other side to patch the aggressive side. How far along is it?

The 6 Pec3 qts got a shake today


The 4 PE ms qts that are a day behind and look happy


The 2 pec4 qts are looking good too… these started out as a pea+ f1 MS inoculation… I didn’t like the germination I was getting after 6 days (only one of the qts had a colony the size of a quarter on the bottom so I decided to re-pc them and reinoculated them with the pec4 glc, hence the darker colored rye.. I hate losing grain and often I’ll recook jars I don’t like or if I notice bacteria early on from the inoculate. Sometimes they’re a bit slower because they’re drier but they always finish fine


The pec3 should be ready to spawn in a few days. I’m excited to see how it does since it’s untested

Made my first PE bins of the season today.. excited to see what this untested clone has to offer. This clone, pec3 (same with pec4 that’s coming up next) was taken last December and I dried it out in grain and revived it at the beginning of this month. Pretty neat.. here’s the jars yesterday (they finished today


Trying the 2” thick CV top layer instead of peat casing with a couple testers.. I split 1 qt of rye between two 8 cup containers.. left one has a liner and a little bit more than the non-liner right one


Got a new rack!


Got a bunch of PE coming up.. MS, pec3, 4, and pec2. Should be fun!

For the last two bins (4 qts of spawn), I accidentally inoculate a GLC grain jar with 2 different PE clone cultures (2 and 4), so I decided to do a couple tubs of them to see what comes of it.. they’re both banging cultures so hopefully they play nice with each other

Put the 2nd layer of peat casing on the first 2 bins of pec3 (the untested clone), so I’m pretty excited I’m in home stretch to see how that turns out

How has compression been working out for you?

I compressed  1/2 and other side was your normal way. I'm a fan of the (2) spaced out casings. Based on quicker time to pins. I'll post pictures either at final harvest or if other side wakes up.

Jury is still out, but I think it’s gonna be the peat casings ftw unless I get a lot more weight off the compression.. I did start doing thin compression on my non PE though and I like that for sure.. the PE/RW had a 1/4” compressed layer

I caught the cake bug as I've only did 6 cakes at once and 3 went to bulk. So really don’t have much cake experience. Oven was used as an incubator with light on and door cracked   

5 years or so ago.

For PE do you dunk and roll with Verm or just do a 50:50?

Sorry I missed this.. I don’t usually dnr but I did a cv roll with some PE/RW cakes recently.. I don’t think it matters much honestly.. they’ll make pins wherever and if there’s fewer of them, they’ll just be bigger fruits.. I suggest lc for cakes.. goes much faster.

I actually like to put a thin cv layer between the cake top/bottom and a straight verm DEC layer… if you use cv for the whole layer, the cake colonizes too much of it. I also like using cv in the cake recipe instead of straight verm.. cakes perform noticeably better

Alrighty! Got 2 bins about to pop… definitely should’ve went with another thin patch layer but this culture was untested and I didn’t think it’d take 25+ Days to start fruiting.. I think it’ll be fine though.. there’s a ton of knots just under the last thin patch layer.. it’s aight, now I know what to expect for later tubs.


I think this is going to be my workhorse culture.. the baggie I made from the glc grains that made ^^^those tubs is blowing my mind (4oz jar comparison for how much grain goes into the baggies).. I need a second baggie over the top because the fruits are pushing out the opening


Got 8 more tubs coming up behind these (staggered)… some more pec3.. ms, pec4, pec2 and a couple mixed tubs of pec2 & 4 (lol).

I really packed the cv in that baggie, so I’ll be doing like a 1:4 on future tubs.. my usual ratio is 1:2

Yeah don't think I'm squeezing agar in some cakes. Got my LC's going from some ropes, been a minute since I've done LCs. 

 

You're PE took off really quickly, already on decent 2nd flush. Pins keep aborting. Bags too holey or that arid fall air came quickly. Not my best agar selections just went with 1st cleanish spots. 
My swab off yours is just sitting there consolidating the monster cake. Was wondering if I should dunk it, but maybe I'll wait a bit. I'm approaching 28 days I think. 

Wrong spot but yeah.
