Do you have to use wood in the sub, or can I get away with a coir based substrate?

Just CV works well but they will eat sawdust, straw, poo, cardboard and probably much more.

A bag of Natalensis. I keep meaning to toss an air hose into the bag for FAE, they'd look so much better if I did.

I made a couple trashcans outside with pea gravel and drain holes in the bottom. I put a layer of compost then multiple clean subs that were then covered in potting soil and bark, all straight from the bag. The Natalensis mycelium is happily munching it's way through all of it! First pin today!

Natal bag, 2nd flush. I tried cloning some of the brain like tissue, I should have cloned some of the heavily crinkled stipes too.

It’s been 12 days since inoculating with agar wedges. The growth is not as quick as I expected, but I don’t think it’s at ideal temperatures, probably a tad low with air conditioning running. But the growth looks nice!

Thank you Phlegmbae, it is a 20 gallon trashcan with drain holes drilled in the bottom. I put down a layer of pea gravel, then some compost, then the subs and filled in around them and a little on the top with cacti soil. I put a thin layer of sand over that, some annual RGS and drip line with a sheet of plastic clamped loosely over the top. This picture is of Caerulescens in a trashcan.

Are you using graveyard subs? Or fresh spawn/subs?

The subs were fresh and clean. The compost, soil, etc were straight from the bag.

I have an old plastic 32gal can getting worn, but still good for something like this... I'm building me one NO doubt, thank you, really cool and I think @Arathu is doing something similar with his beautiful Hen of the Woods (and Oysters).  Be great for 3rd flush subs, and edible blocks, Mush Luv getting creative with this hobby, for me, that is what it's all about, and a HUGE reason why I do this (Edible Blocks... Yum Yum)... the thrill of the hunt and or harvest, what a driving mechanism.  Dirtymakers Fur LIFE!   :meditate:

P.S NICE Caerulescens... I'm diggin' that light capped Monster.

Two trashcans of Nats, one on it's first, the other on it's 2nd flush.

I'll apologize now for when Natalensis takes over the world!
Growing out the bottom, through an inch of pea gravel and fruiting into 100F++ weather with low humidity.

Yeah......the can/drum culture is something I put together to fruit G. frondosa......turns out ALL KINDS of fungus loves this TEK....been using drums for some time now...

The pea gravel bottom liner I put right on top of a screen or landscape cloth....it's about an inch thick....on that I build my layers depending on the species.....

Yoshi is demonstrating his own variations and in a completely different ecosystem and environment......nothing more really needs to be said about his results....just look...

Indeed I hope to see more people try it.....I will have to do a write up on the TEK......

Good stuff folks....
