Couple days ago I opened up a few jars of Cambodian strain and started 3 cakes. These were started after my first batch had been opened and I was just starting to have a bit of a clue. Im interested to see how these cakes do now that I know what not to do to almost kill them immediately.

But when I removed them from the jars every single cake broke off at the end. So I had 3 small chunks left. So I decided to do some experiments and see how they did compared to the ones prepared more properly.

Step one..... Find some containers.

Brought in my recycling the other day so I pulled a few items out to use as fruiting chambers. In the end I used a yogurt container. An orange juice jug. A shakey cheese container. A subway salad tray. And a Kool Aid container. A little modification to each one gave me a removable top.

I had half a brick of coir opened so I mixed up a coffee/coir substrate.

And then I needed to pastuerize it. I have no pressure cooker. So let's try what everything I've read says not to do. Microwave.

Cut two slits in a plastic baggie held on with a rubber band. They had to be at least an inch long or else the baggie blew up like a balloon and tried to shoot off the jar. I ran them 5 times for 4 minutes each time with a 5 minute break between.
The entire house smelled like microwaved dirt.

Now that I have my improperly prepared substrate I got out the chunks of cakes. All three added up to about half of a half pint jar.

I used my bathroom counter as a work space. And I wiped it off with alcohol but it's not a clean space. I'm kinda just asking for contamination here....we'll see in a couple weeks.

I ripped up all the chunks and mixed in the coir sub and made several tiny bulk trays.

They all got a couple holes poked in them covered with breathable medical tape and are now sitting at about 82deg and hopefully feeling happy enough to start colonizing .

Will let you know what they look like in about 10 days.

Decided it was time to inspect and case the micro ghetto containers. Doesn't seem like the microwaved sub acted any different than the one I pasteurized in the oven. Looks like there was even a couple little pins already starting when I added the casing. I do think these little containers will be pretty neat once they start fruiting.... But its kinda a lot of work for a 3inch round grow.

They'd make great gifts if a person wasn't trying to hide what they're doing. But I don't think they're gonna make mushrooms legal anytime soon. So ixsnay on that thought.

Didn't expect to be pulling these yet. The winner of the ghetto grow race is definitely the kool aid container. Also the easiest to open and water.

The other little containers finally caught up. The yogurt tub will probably produce 6-7 grams judging by the other dried weights from this strain. It's enough for one good hurrah!

It was a fun experiment and the microwave substrate worked as good as the oven prepped. And so far no contamination....i was a bit worried on that. I kept eyeballing the mildew and dust on the window sill less than a foot from my prep spot.

All in all. It was fun. The tiny grows are cute. But I think I will stick to the shoebox tubs. Better production to effort ratio.

Coir doesn't need to be pasteurized to be an effective bulk sub which might explain why the microwave tek and the oven pasturization were equally effective.

I like what you are doing with recycling and the outside of the box thinking for your grows. Reminds me of how I used to do the majority of my grows. I probably will still be doing things that way because recycling is great and yogurt containers are so versatile.

Point taken Moonless. I guess I didn't know that coir was good to go. So I guess my little experiment was biased towards success.
I do like the small opaque kool aid container. I'm thinking of trying those again with the tampanensis strain since they should be more potent and a smaller yield would be acceptable. Next time I'm going to run an air line in for constant air flow since the small container doesn't make for a very big air reservoir.

Tampanensis need more FAE than cubes so an air pump into the FC is a good idea.

Nice one OldPunk!!!
I like this way of thinking. Good use of old containers! And ive learned that coir doesnt need pasteurised by checking this out! Thanks Moonless!
