Very nice! I haven’t tried that setup with the bags (cakes partially buried in verm in the container).. I used to Rez effect grains in shallow dishes and I had a trich problem.. my solution was to heat treat the verm.. when I used it right out of bag is when it would go south. I do use it right out of bag these days but the cakes are sitting on perlite so they’re raised up a bit to where the air holes are poked in the bag.. I’m wondering if there being no holes in your dish and so much if it away from the air holes if that’s why you’re seeing contamination before first flush.

I know I’ve tried a few ways to heat treat the verm: pouring boiling water on the verm, putting wet verm in the microwave, and putting verm in a vegetable steamer... pretty sure i didn’t settle on the microwave because of inconsistency but if you have one of those all in one slow cooker deals ppl have nowadays, there’s a setting on them that’s 160f and ppl throw stuff in there for a few hours to pasteurize

But either way, beautiful cakes man!

Thanks!  It would probably be good to heat treat the verm.  I think I used too much in that one, too.  It may be better to just put a little bit in there, like I'm double-end casing with verm.

Yo.... Seriously awesome work and pictures. I can't believe those cakes. And the close ups make me wanna try one of those microscopes.

Bravo Sidestreet. Beautiful work!

Thanks man!  I was surprised at how well those two single cakes did.  They lived in a cottage cheese tub and a yogurt tub with holes punched in the sides, and a little vermiculite too.  Sat in the closet with a fan on a timer three times a day (not pointing straight at them, just in the same closet with them.  Also I have a little bar light in there that I turn on a couple of times a day while they're fruiting, so that they grow vertical.  Super easy.

The microscope is a Tomlov.  It's not bad for ~$120 bucks.  It looked like it had the best reviews in that price range.

Today was a big agar day.  For starters, I poured some new plates and decided that in the future I'll split my recipe into 2 pint jars instead of using a quart jar or other big vessel.  This should let the agar cool faster and make it easier to handle in my glovebox.

I transferred a Redboy clone, a Redboy MS plate, and took a couple of PE pins to agar.

But maybe the most exciting thing I did was clone some Reishi that I found in the Appalachian woods yesterday:

I'm not too interested in growing it out but I bet someone will want to trade for it once I have a good culture.  :)

Bonus: here's a couple of closeups of the pores on the underside of the mushroom.

Heh heh that's OK, I started us on this little detour.  If I change my mind about growing it out I can start a separate thread.

PE pinning, from LC "A".  I have a second bag with six cakes inoculated with my LC "B" that are lagging well behind.  The "A" cakes went much faster so I'll discard the "B" LC.

Like I said above, I took pins from the "A" cakes to agar but they'll take some cleaning up because, who knew, when you pluck pins off of a fruiting cake there's going to be some bacteria involved.  I tried dunking the pins in peroxide in the glove box first but I'm not sure whether it helped.  I may take some more clones from the mature fruits as a backup.

I once had good luck cloning a pin from a cake, but it was pinning invitro, so it was still inside of a nice clean PF jar.  I should try that method again, it worked really well.

And some Redboy pins.  One of the Redboy clones I took is doing really well so far.  Clean, even.

Well, let's see how many of those bumps turn out to be PE "blobs", but I've never strayed too far from cakes.  I still think they're great.

2nd flush from a couple Redboy cakes.  Given the amount of contamination I've had with the RBs, I'm retiring these cakes after two flushes.  BUT I got two different clones growing on agar that I'll be able to test out soon.

Update: Here are the Penis Envy cakes.  There are some tiny fruits with caps, and then a lot of little blobs, and then a crazy Cronenberg mass that I might clone.

PE1.jpg    PE2.jpg

Here's a PE clone I took off of one of the cakes.  It needs cleaning up but I think I'm going to let it run on the agar a bit longer to grow further away from the contamination:

PEclone1.jpg

And here's a closeup of the same plate:

A Redboy clone that I'm calling "Stubs":

And a couple of closeups of mycelium on agar:

This one is trich, I think:

Really cool.

I am really diggin that microscope you picked up.
Not to mention just good looking work.

I need to look into some petri dishes. I like how clearly you can see what's going on.

Thanks!  It's not a fantastic microscope but I didn't see other people posting much of anything under magnification so it's something different.  I do like the petris but I might end up using some no-pours for certain things too.
