I've got a few dozen shrunken, fully spawned PF jars. They're 10 years old. From what I can tell, there's nothing wrong with them other than being really dry (and old of course). I know cultures can go dormant, and I need these jars - so why not! I'll take some pictures before I perform the dunk and post them here. If they plump up I plan to just do my good ole' standard DEC with perlite in Sterilites.
I'm going for it - rehydrating 10 year old PF cakes!

Mmmmm, I wonder if it might be better to inject some sterile water in them to let the mycelium revive without competition from anything else before dunking.

Pulling up the chair! I usually don't like Miracle Grow products but this round I am rooting for ya!
Edit: If you need some spores to look at, let me know?

@jrh - my cakes are strong! They have stood the test of time - we're going in raw. Jokes aside, there's nothing nutritive, so I feel like with a non-nutritive casing and lots of FAE, things will work out well. Fingers crossed, anyway.

Mad science is the best science!
Good luck, and I hope they don't turn out to be killer zombie cakes or anything...

Due to my utter lack of time and my immediate need for jars (I guess half pint wide mouths aren't available in stores yet/anymore?), I decided to just release the cakes into the wild. I was actually feeling pretty good about their chances - it's very humid at the moment. But alas, it looks like we have a cold snap coming in - so I bet they're all goners.
However, I also found a flat of colonized popcorn jars - same age. I'll make sure to get a picture once I dig my digital camera. They're so desiccated, it doesn't even look like popcorn. I may try to just go straight to more popcorn with them, and maybe try an agar plate or two.
