I have so many incense I burn at least 5 a day. I burn durbars, masala, loose herb, dhoops, the list is endless.
Palo Santo and Sage are great, Sage and Copal are good. My favorite for the past few years has been Oakmoss.

Oh no! I've been wanted to forage some local sage cause it's all growing right now, and this makes me weary! I'll only burn a little bit first.

Good chance I did it wrong too. Just lit the leaves still on the branch and let it smoke in my sink for a few minutes. There was a decent amount of smoke coming out. There was the slight smell of sage but mostly that stinky ashy smell like after you blast a joint inside
And it may be the type I used as well. There seems to be some difference in the garden variety versus the bush version that I had

I use my dehydrator to dry fresh sage that I got from the grocery store. I want to try wild crafting some like you and I would use the same method. I think I prefer to dry the leaves and crush into a powder to burn on my charcoal.

Ya likely the stems put off a bunch on unwanted aroma's. It was a throw away experiment I did not place much thought into it other than taking a lighter to it and wafting it around my kitchen for a bit

Do you know what species you harvested?

I had to google it after I picked it but the smell is unmistakable so I knew I was on the right track.
Turns out it was the sage brush version or technically
Artemisia tridentata Nutt
Here is a picture I stole off the internet of what it looks like around here
Apparently not the same as many find in their gardens but this "sage brush" is the only type I am familiar with

I am fortunate that I live in the foothills in Southern California, and there are at least 3 sage varieties growing around me. My preferred by far is the Salvia Apiana or "White Sage". It is sold in smudge sticks all over the country and is fantastically aromatic.
Because it is being over harvested, driven by greed, I will no longer take from the scrub lands around me. I have two plants that have been happy in my yard for many years now, that I planted, and they supply all I need and allow me to gift some occasionally.
They are going into flower now. The flower of the White Sage is pale purple and white. I will soon have thousands of seeds, so I will be happy to share. Let me know as I don't always save seeds.
It is somewhat challenging to germinate, but a little love goes far in that area.
My Plants,
Today I have been burning some sage, and some Dragons Blood Resin .
Later in the day I used some Orange Blossom oil.
I like to make Smudge bundles fresh, and tie some fresh lavender in the bundle when I tie it. I leave mine hang around the house until I need a new one, and it is usually dry by then....

It can be a beautiful thing when the moment is right, a person is out in the grassland after a fresh rain. The slightest bit of wind and the smell of sage, grass and cool water fills the air. It smells really fantastic and is the only natural smell that reminds me of "home"

Full Moon house cleansing today. I was down to the end of my sage bundle, so I decided today would also be a perfect day to harvest and bundle some fresh Smudging Bundles. I also replace the fresh sage in the rooms when I do this, and then burn the old.
The entire house smells and feels fresh and clean !
