I am approaching the end of the first flush on my first ever bulk substrate. The substrate is inside a 12qt tub. I plan to build a DonShadow Shadowbox in the next few days which should really assist with maintaining ideal humidity and FAE. After dunking/rehydrating the bulk substrate, can I put it on top of something like an inverted tub lid, instead of it being inside the 12qt tub? The sides of the tub are so high that is seems that the air stagnates in the bottom of it at the substrate level very easily, and I would like to avoid that for the 2nd flush. Thanks everyone.

Do exactly that. Put your sub on the lid and put the tub on top. It will make life easy when it's time to harvest.

Hey that's an interesting idea, putting the overturned 12qt tub over the top. I was asking about placing the sub on the lid inside of a 90-qt tub that has been modified as a humidity-controlled and cpu fan-assisted FAE Shadowbox.

I did make a Shadowbox and after dunking the substrates for 12 hrs I placed them in the fancy new fruiting chamber to await the 2nd flush. Most growth was along the edges of the substrate but was abundant. After harvesting this flush I noticed a great number of tiny pins on the underside of the substrates, so I dunked for another 12 hrs and have placed them bottoms-up for their next round in the Shadowbox.

Thank you - it was very gratifying for my first ever bulk substrate grow. Being able to control the humidity and fae more to the GT's liking in the Shadowbox vs a 12-qt tub made all the difference.

Did you use the same tub or a larger one? interesting idea! I might use it with my cheesecloth TEK grow...

Where did you find the plans for the shadowbox? I tried googling it but no joy.

Hello FF, here are the Shadowbox plans I followed, originally posted by Mycotopia member DonShadow: https://mycotopia.ne...-grow-tutorial/

I strayed from his plans by using a 70-qt Perlite tub because it was a bit longer than the one he used, but in retrospect it is better to use the kind he suggested which has the sealing gasket all around the lid. It's necessary to have a good seal so that air is drawn from the outside only through the 1/4" venting holes into the fruiting chamber and then up and out via the cpu fan on the lid. I made my non-sealing tub work by using window sealing gasket material and then having velcro straps around the four sides to snug the lid down onto the gasket.

If I had the room I would use this 120-qt sealing tub: https://www.grainger...wE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I also use a larger "muffin" fan than in the Shadowbox tek, namely this one, which comes with the ac cord already attached: https://www.amazon.c...0?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And I use this aquarium pump, which is powerful and very nearly silent. Be sure to get some stronger air hose, because the stuff that comes with the pump is like flimsy latex and thus easily squashed by the weight of the perlite and water inside the tub, which could restrict air flow to eh aerator stones: https://www.amazon.c...0?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I use these 5-inch aeration stones: https://www.amazon.c...0?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And finally, I use this LED lighting source, which is great because it includes blue light as an option: https://www.amazon.c...0?ie=UTF8&psc=1
