Since I've been on a kick of running a variety of recipes I decided to go out on a limb and try this idea I had yesterday and thats if Mycelium seems to enjoy potato water.. then what about peas? They're quite rich with carbohydrates so I thought worst case scenario I end up with cups looking like what I was already having prior to simplifying the recipe, so I proceeded to catch the water in a jar upon straining and here we are.

Pea Agar (3).jpg

200ml Pea Water

12g Agar Agar powder

5g Dextrose

1g Peptone

to 300ml boiling water to bring the collective water volume to 500ml.

Aaaaand some extra green to pretty it up a bit.

[insert obligatory joke about using "pea water" to grow fungi here]

It's always cool to see how other things work for growing fungi, so I'm pulling up a chair to see how it goes.

I couldn't really think of a good enough joke about using sterile pea water so I just pointed out where it would have gone had I come up with one.

Well hopefully urine for a treat

I'd see myself out but I'm running the experiment lol  :chucks:

Is it also a coincidence that this experiment is being run by someone named, "Salty"... ?

I expect the experiment should work. I've made agar from string beans and it worked just as well as PDA.

You can use all kinds of crazy stuff - even dog food.

I've seen some "Kibble-Agar" Recipes floating around as well that I was thinking about giving a try just for the go of it, but I had JUST enough agar agar left for the Pea recipe so I need to wait for more to arrive to run any more recipes haha. When I dipped into a thread on agar recipes (By Seeker I think?) referenced in a post by CatsAndBats' Agar 3.0 thread I happened to spot a 'V8' Recipe so it would be easy for me to imagine the pea water will work fine as well, I just want to see it for myself and to one day have a long list of attempted recipes under my belt lol Hopefully they will be classified as more successes than shortcomings  :deadhorse:

Had to put a pin in this and come back to it but I'll be pouring my pea cups (hehe) tonight and they'll be getting spores and maybe a few will get transfers tomorrow morning.

Here we go, got a transfer onto some of that Pea Dextrose Agar.

At the time I had used up all my Potato Dextrose cups but those also had a little bit of Yeast and Peptone added to them so I didn't want to do a side by side with those cups. Instead I'll whip up another batch soon as I'm going to need to do so anyway. I'm thinking I'll do a batch of Potato dextrose without the Yeast and peptone, one with, and I'll make another batch of Pea Agar and add the same amounts of Yeast and Peptone that I add to the Potato Dextrose recipe that I include it in.

Update to the Pea Agar recipe, it seems that Pea Water can be used as a sufficient alternative (not saying it's "Better") to Potato water/potato flakes if one finds theirself making a late night batch of agar and don't have any potatoes but plenty of frozen peas haha.
