Just received a gift of a good portion of Cactus skin that had been blended nearly to a powder, looks like chunky kratom. Seems quite heavy, said to weigh about 150 grams or so.

I am not an extractor, and would prefer to make a tea, but it seems to me that somewhere on here I read where these turn very quickly into a thick mucousy mess. As I understand it the mucous part is mostly plant fats. My plan is to boil it for a couple hours in a large pot, set it in the fridge overnight and allow some separation to occur, then spoon off most of the mucousy plant fats, hopefully to leave a nice layer of alkaloid laden water that I can then reduce to a more palatable tea.

Any advice is appreciated. Not seen anything in here about making tea from skins, in particular blended ones. I would like to do this during the next week and plan on next Friday for one helluva ride. Considering doing both doses and bending over for the universe to have it's way with me lol. Made quite a bit of tea in my days, but usually from fresh wet cactus, not dried concentrated skins grinded into a powder.

As I said, all advice is appreciated. Any pointers?

at 150 grams of dried plant matter you may have 1.5 grams of mesc plus or minus 50 percent depending on growing conditions etc

my point being that you have some wiggle room there. Yes, you may discard some of the mesc while getting rid of the goo but depending on the ratio of goo to liquid you may still have a stiff dose in hand.

I'd say seperate the goo from the liquid but do not discard it. freeze it for some later research project....... you never know.............

Then just go with a normal tea tek.

BUT,  don't drink the whole quantity all at once.  If you have a full day set aside to do the buzz ( and I really recommend you do, plus another day after to get "normal" ) you can drink, let's say half the total, and see where you're at in two hours. It may be all the ride you can handle or it may be too little. If you drink the whole thing in two doses of two hours apart you'll be up for most of a day, mesc is very speedy, but you'd have been up for most of a day anyway if you'd only done the first half of the tea. IMHO too little is a giant let down and I'd rather regret having gone too large than too small.

However, a normal tea tek has you boiling the powder anyway, which has the effect of denastyfying the gooeyness anyway. A tea tek will also have you doing some fltering as well which will remove some of the unpleasantness of the ride.

Filter in stages. Use cloth first to remove the bulk of the crud. Then a couple layers of paper towel. Then pass the already filtered liquid through a cotton ball in the funnel. That's the ticket to the cleanest filtration you're likely to get outside a lab (hat tip to Tregar for that tip). After that, if you have time you can put your filtered liquid in the coldest part of your fridge and the rest of the solids will crash out on the bottom of the container. Decant or siphon away from that crud and you're golden.

Sorry I didn't get to this sooner. Looks like today is the day. If not, we're here to help.

For your consideration:

I made a milkshake with 50 grams of it. It was awesome, though I'm pretty sure 35-40 grams would have been plenty, maybe even less. I'll never mess with the hideous tea again. You might want to powder it a bit finer that it sounds like yours currently is since "chunky style" is not ideal for a milkshake.

You also might want to decant it first.

See the reply to the linked thread above that was posted after mine about the Calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals and the kidney stone potential from consuming too much "dirty cactus goo" which I'd not heard before I read about it there (and had forgotten about until just now). I don't consume enough cactus to worry about that, I hope, and it's not certain that San Pedro/Peyote/Torch even have that problem (it might be common to cacti in general but not all species; probably worth looking into).
