Hi there Mycotopians,

So I've been pretty successful with manually stirring liquid culture (LC) thus far. However, no matter how hard I try I often get the fiberfil air filter wet when whirling the jar around by hand. So I went ahead and got a powered magnetic plate stirrer.

Now the next challenge: getting the correct size stir bar for my liquid culture jars.

The majority of the time I am working with 200mL of liquid in a 1 pint jar (so the jar is roughly half full of LC). What's the optimal size magnetic stir bar for this quantity of liquid in this size jar? Note: it's not too viscous. Just a bit of honey and gypsum in distilled water then later the mycelium "cloud" that has grown out inside.

Are there any charts to match the size of the bar to the quantity of liquid / size of the jar that are specifically for mycelium liquid culture?

Thanks in advance,

I have used 1"~1.25" stir bars for quart and pint jars. I've also used 0.5" and 0.25" stir bars in pint jars of LC that seemed to work fine with breaking up cultures.
