This is probably old news for some of you guys but I've learned a lot about making better bubble hash this year. I'd love to hear any extra advice or tips you guys may want to share. When I first started out, I'd make black hash that was pretty good, now I'm much happier with the results!

The first step, I could already do a better job at is starting material. I should have done a tighter trim on my starting material removing more leaf and stem material. That being said, I started this run with 3 loosely packed gallon bags of fresh trim and small buds from my RomulanxChernobyl cross, the sister #2. If I had packed the bags, it'd probably only be a gallon of trim. I froze the trim for over 24hrs in prep for hash making.

I use 4 bubble bags in the process, 225, 120, 73 and 25 micron. I pour some ice in my 5 gallon bucket then start stacking the bags inside, starting with the smallest micron. Fold the top of your bags over the edge of the buckets to hold them in place. Once ready, I add my fresh/frozen trim into the 225 bag and add ice to it then fill the bucket with water until the ice and trim just start to float. If you are using dried herb, you might wait about 20 min before the next step.

Using a wooden spoon I stir the ice solution firmly about 120 times before draining the 225 bag. While I do the other bags, I keep the trim/ice bag in an ice chest.

Next I drain the 120 micron bag, this is considered "edible" hash. After it drains, I move the bag to a 2nd 5 gallon bucket and rinse the sides of the bag down and gently rinse the collected trichomes before scraping them up and placing in the drying rig.

When done, pull the bag, swirl the leftover rinse water and dump it back into the original bucket.

Next, pull your 73 micron bag and repeat.

The slowest part of the process for me is draining the 25 micron bag. What I do now is leave the draining of the 25 micron to the very end. So at this point, push the 73 micron back inside the 25 then the 120 back into the 73 and eventually pull the 225 out of the ice chest and press it back into the water. Since the rinse water has raised the overall water level, I drain some water out to get back to the ideal level. Then start the process again. Depending on your yield, I repeat the runs 6-9 times. On the last run after scraping up the hash, I flip the bags inside out and rinse them into the rinse water. When the 25 micron is left, I drain the water from the bucket. Once it has drained enough, I turn the bag inside out in the 2nd bucket and wash it all into the bucket. From there I dump it into a quart jar and take it inside to be washed. I noticed the 25 micron collects a lot of floating nasty material. With the quart jar, let the trichomes settle, dump out 1/2 the dirty water and refill with clean water. Repeat until the water is clean and then drain it through the side of the 25 micron bag.

Once you collected your 73 and 120 it is time to "freeze dry" them. This is my $$$ drying rig. A folded piece of parchment paper inside of a folded piece of cardboard, with spring clamps holding it, inside a zip top bag, all inside the freezer.

After the initial freeze, I wrap the parchment paper with doubled up paper towels, put it back in the cardboard with the clamps then the bag and back into the freezer. Twice a day, I'll pull them from the freezer, let them warm a touch then change out the damp paper towels. If the cardboard is damp, you can use a new piece too. Then back into the freezer.

After a few days, you'll notice the paper towels become less damp. Once it is where you want it, pull it straight from the freezer, scrape it all up into one mass then wrap in fresh parchment then into a storage jar and back in the freezer. When I go to use it, I let the jar warm a little before opening. I weigh out a 1/2 or full gram of desired hash and put that in a small glass holder and put the rest back in the freezer.

The final product burns smooth, is packed with terpenes and hits like a sledge.

I like to use the "napkin" provided with my grow bags. Not sure of the mesh size.

I also use Bondo spreaders to retrieve the hash from the bottom of the bag(s).

Lay out a finger of hash onto the "napkin" I described and roll it up like a tight joint in a bath towel. The pressure forces out much of the water.

Then, place the "napkin" in the freezer. Once hardened by freezing, the finger of hash is more easily managed.

After that I just let it air dry and call it done.

Otherwise, our methods are very similar.

Froze, fresh,  trim (no dried material). Crush the frozen trim with a meat tenderizing mallet. Into the bubble bags with ice............etc.

But to be fair, I only use three bags - blue work bag, gold collection bag, and purple final mesh bag.

I found grading the product to be too tedious. I tend to get gold colored hash from the gold bag and greener hash from the purple finish bag.

I also use an agitator to help the purple bag drain faster. Otherwise, it takes a very long time.

Thanks for the tips Myc!

I think the "napkin" is 25 micron? I like the Bondo scraper idea too. I have squeezed the collection bags gently after draining to get some of the water out. It makes it easier to scrape up too. I think with the green 120 mic bag between the work bag (225) and the yellow (73) I get a cleaner product in the yellow.

I tend to enjoy flower more anyway so I'll probably combine the green and the purple bags for edibles then just burn the yellow.

Does your pink pistil producer make tinted hash?

@YoshiTrainer is your choice of bag size calibrated to a specific strain or do you use the same protocol for all strains? I'm asking because I've read about people choosing their bags specifically based on the trichomes that their specific strain produces. What I mean by this is that they choose one size that collects the heads, one size that collects the stalks then maybe one more to collect everything else. I haven't made bubble hash in so long, I've been doing BHO instead. But I do intend to get back into it when I get a press. One more question (for Myc too since it seems you do the same thing) what is the benefit of fresh/frozen over using dried material? When I used to make bubble, it was always from dried material so I've never had the opportunity for comparison

I like to turn my shake into Bubble Hash, then throw it in a 37 micron screen for Bubble Rosin.  So delicious!

That looks amazing Mush! I love watching resin pressing videos, so satisfying!

El Ron, my bag choices are based of what I've read or watched. I think since I'm growing outdoors and have sativa and hybrid genetics that they are producing smaller trichomes than indoor indicas. I've read the yellow (73) micron is "full melt" and run the green (120) before it to clean up the 73. Some of my first runs I used a 160 instead of 120 and the 73 left black ash in the dab rig. Running the 120 instead, cleaned it up some. A friend brought over some indoor shake and the 120 bag was filled with trichomes, almost as much as the 73.

One benefit of doing fresh frozen is the smell, It smells like fresh picked weed! You can also do fresh/frozen runs with BHO but I think there are subtle differences in the flower prep?

This thread inspired me to purchase a set of bags like those featured in the original post.

I've never had the full-mesh bags so I decided to try a set of 5 for my purposes. So far, I am really enjoying how they drain out more quickly than the canvas-sided bags. I also like that there are no waterproofing materials which can break down and wind up in your hash product.

I also now have two 25-micron pressing screens which really helps speed things up.

Nice Myc, have fun with them, I'd love to see some hash from your pink beauty!

After all the bubble runs, I completely dried the various batches and did a CO2 run. After rinsing away the veg matter and drying, I ended up with a pint of CO2 hash for edibles.

Today I've been extracting some Indica dominant herb which didn't do so well. The weed is quite larfy and harsh to smoke (I've been making some mistakes in the garden for the past few grows).

I'm pulling large amounts in the gold bag and decent amounts in the red bag. Also getting a little food-grade stuff for cooking from each of the "purple" bags. It's still wet so I have no reference point but I dumped two or three ounces of whole, dried buds into the mix for this batch.

Tomorrow, I am thinking about extracting from a 1/4 pound of Sativa dominant herb.

Interested to see what comes out.

Will post-up some pics for reference once I'm finished.

Thanks for posting up this thread. I was long overdue for some new bags.

I need to do another B Hash run to clear up some shake in the freezer.  Maybe do some dry ice extraction for Kief, I like using the low grade for making butter in a Crock pot.  Virtually no taste and POTENT (CheeseCloth)!
