Quite surprisingly, the temperature in the outdoor greenhouse reached as high as 112F for extended periods in late spring, but the mushrooms were not adversely affected. The higher temperatures produced fruits with very long spines, almost like spaghetti (see the last photo). This grow demonstrated that Lion's Mane will fruit between 50-112F.
The indoor martha tent was kept in a closet at 72F, and 90-95% relative humidity was provided using an ultrasonic humidifier coupled with a small fan and triggered by a humidistat. Air exchanged every hour.
In the outdoor greenhouse we placed a few wire bread racks salvaged from a grocery store and kept the bags on the lower shelves, low to the ground in the shade of some tall grass. Humidity was provided by indirectly hosing down the ground and grass near the racks every couple of days (rarely directly on the bags).
Bags were incubated until fruitbodies began to form inside, and small holes (1/2' - 1' diameter) were cut directly over areas that had already begun to fruit (3-5 holes per bag).
The substrate was the same for every bag:
Supplemented Sawdust Spawn
Ingredients:
- 4.5 cups (26oz) pure hardwood fuel pellets
- 1 cup bran (oat or wheat bran is best)
- 4.5 cups cold reverse osmosis or distilled water
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 1.5oz (50ml) gypsum
Procedure:
- Place hardwood pellets into standard 14A mycobag.
- Add bran.
- Pour 4.5 cups cold water directly into bag and wait 5 minutes to allow pellets/bran to hydrate and expand.
- Boil 1/2 cup water and mix with gypsum until lumps have dissolved.
- Pour gypsum liquid over hydrated pellets and mix everything well.
- Close bag using vinyl clamp or make several small folds and clamp with binder clips or bulldog clips, squeezing as much air out of the bag as possible.
- Load bag(s) into pillowcase and tie it closed with non-synthetic string or yarn.
- Pour at least 1.5 inches of water into pressure canner/cooker and place jar rings or shallow mason jars under the canner rack to elevate the bags well above the water line.
- Load pillowcase/bags into canner and sterilize for 2 hours at 15PSI.
- Once the bags have completely cooled, inoculate with 1/2qt (500ml) grain spawn and seal, leaving plenty of airspace in the top of the bag.
- Mix well and incubate at appropriate temperature.

High temperatures made the fruits looks like the flying spaghetti monster:
