Just got a DNA sequence back on a bluing Gymnopilus collected by Juno Jang in Montgomery, Alabama which confirms that Gymnopilus subspectabilis is present there.  https://mushroomobserver.org/481904   Since it's in Alabama I am pretty sure this one from Georgia is also this species.  https://mushroomobserver.org/152294

 

This is the first confirmed record of this species in the southeastern USA.

New sightings are interesting. Do you suppose people are finding more active mushrooms because we are noticing what has always been there or are the ranges of the mushrooms expanding?

I think more people are noticing them and using the internet to figure out what they are.
