Spawned the rest of the grain yesterday!

Also, the PE bags were done enough that I put a 1/2" compressed layer of coir on them as a casing:

DSCN1449.jpg

(I took the pic before putting on the casing layer)

and here are the bags in the closet.  I've got a fan running quite a few times a day in short bursts and a light bar that I turn on and off manually.  Other than that, I'll open the bags often to spray down the inside walls and get some extra fresh air going.

Now I just need to sit back and enjoy the fireworks!  Oh, except for casing the Mexicana bags... I need to do some research into that.

I've struggled real bad this season with exotic bags. I've cased and left uncased a bunch, they are patience testers.

50:50 with sand is best.

"put down my spawn. covered it completely in sand, then put a peat/ verm casing over that. about 7 days from pin to harvest
ill answer any questions asked"

Nice progress. I wanted to take another try at the zip lock bags again... the prep is just so easy. Been a busy year so anything that makes it easier.

Can't wait to see how they grow out!

OK, time for some money shots.  The first to fruit is the Redboy isolate, which totally does not surprise me.  I let them open up nice and wide so I could get some spore swabs.

Hey Sidestreet. What did you do with those during fruiting. Cuz whatever it is, you did right.

I've got a couple that should start pinning soon and I've been fanning them with a lid a few times a day without opening the bags. I poked a ton of holes this time.

So I read back up the posts and saw the fan. I've been thinking of trying the same thing. I'm so busy this year that automating a bit would be nice. How often is the fan run?

Thanks folks.  I guess I should say that those pics are all different angles of the same bag.  There's just one of the Redboy.

Oldpunk, with the fan, it works for me to run it like 10-15 times a day for 15 minutes at a time (the minimum my timer will allow).  You may need to do something different to dial in your situation.  But in general, having a fan on a timer is fantastic.  It really makes life easier.  I also have a light that I turn on and off manually to get things growing in the right direction--up!

Progress pics of the Penis Envy clones:

DSCN1465.jpg DSCN1466.jpg DSCN1468.jpg

Which one do you think I should keep for long-term preservation? I think the one on the left looks the best out of these.

And my very first Mexicanas.  They're so teeny.  I have two of these bags going.  This one didn't get cased because it was colonizing so slowly it seemed like it never really grew through the coir.  The other one looks much better and is pinning, so hopefully I can get a little jar's worth of fruits to try.  I would love to get a clone from these and do a manure substrate to really see a nice flush of these.  I should also actually do some research--I really didn't look into Mexicanas at all before trying this!

The Rustywhyte is flushing right now and really put out for me.  I'll get pics when I take swabs, probably later today.

Those are nice Mexicana Pins, look healthy.  They will develop a wonderful cap that will sporulate with steady Air at that size.  I just spawned to bulk two trays of Mexicana 4 days ago.  LETS GO

I still haven't gotten any fruits on the Mex. Your surface definitely looks like it's got more moisture on it. Hoping the ziploc method produces....or maybe I should try manure and straw. Got a couple more jars of grain colonizing.

Nice work Sidestreet. Once again

Alright, here are some PEs.

Strain "A":

DSCN1489.jpg DSCN1492.jpg DSCN1493.jpg

Strain "C":

DSCN1494.jpg DSCN1495.jpg DSCN1496.jpg

(That's multiple pics of one bag each.)

Strain "A" is the clear winner in my mind, though "C" gave some bigger fruits.  They are all chonky and solid!  By far my best PEs.  The compressed casing layer seems to have helped a lot.

I haven't been dunking these substrates, but these two seem so healthy, especially A, that I'm gonna go for it and see whether they give a bit more.

And now for the bad news: my good Mexicana bag actually got trich!  I tossed it, but I did get a few tiny fruits to eat.  O well, I have the culture and can try again!

First of all, those are some beautiful grows Sidestreet!

I am curious, you mentioned a compressed casing. I’ve seen Fahtster mention this as well. What exactly are you doing? I assume adding the casing, then tamping it down a little? I wouldn’t mind trying something similar.

Killer PE, SS!

Elpirana: it’s more than a tamp down.. you really want to compress the whole surface down.. you can use anything hard and flat that fits the surface area (you can use your hands obv but its a bit hard to get a nice even compression).. a lot of ppl use cement trowels for larger tubs. The thicker the the layer the better with PE… 2” after compression is standard. You can use thinner but the thinner you go, the more you risk blobs.

I’ve been doing it with regular cubes and using a 1” compressed layer and it works well.. it’s about timing.. if you use more than 1” with regular cubes, they tend to pin before it colonizes most of the comp layer. PE takes so long that a 2” layer is just about right for them to start pinning when that layer is colonized. And it adds bulk to your substrate.. you want to shoot for a 1:4 ratio spawn/substrate. That ratio seems to be the sweet spot for getting the most out of your grain spawn in one flush

I’d say the amount you want to compress is when you feel resistance where you can’t push down anymore before you squeeze water out of the substrate

Beautiful results !!
And thanks for spelling out the compressed casing. I decided to see what happens without casing this time and just picked off a big pile of crazy blobs. Not a single good looking fruit.....oh.......so that's what happens. I've got another jar colonized so I can try the compressed route next with almost the same spawn.

Excellent work Sidestreet.
