I've been bring my oats to a boil, covering and letting it boil for 45 minutes. Drain, dry and pressure cook at 15 psi for 2 hours. Any better ways?

I no prep all my grains, for oats and barley, 2 Tbsp grain and 20ml water makes a 1/4 pint of cooked grains with room to shake. I PC 90 min 15psi for up to quart size jars.

I put oats and pearl barley 50:50 (dry) to boiling point, wait 20 min, then drop it to the 0.5 liter jars, sterilize 90 min twice with 12-24 hours waiting.
Cubs (and especcialy pans) like it, multispore colonize it for 5-10 days.

One thing I m picky about is clean grains, and my tap water is about 145 F. My oats go through about 3 or 4 30 minute soaks, then hang to dry out a bit and in the PC.

The question is why oats?   Always seemed like to much trouble.

How did it turn out Stroker? I'm guessing your jars had too much head space? In my 1/4 pint 1oz out of the 4oz is enough room, for your quarts, should be missing around 8oz. Maybe next time 1.25C grain, 200ml?

good, I might try that next as yes about half full. Moisture content seems right though.

their super cheap, and so far easy to work with. So far just the above prep and now what YoshiTrainer suggested. Wheat berry was my first go at grains, but could only find it at the health food store. Pricey. Next was WBS but washing and cleaning out sunflower seeds was a pain. But was thinking of a mix of WBS and oats. Large and small inoculation points? Feed store has millet, 50 pounds for like 35 bucks....

Those look good Stroker, other than having a little too much room to shake.

Millet might be a good addition for you, you can no-prep it too, straight or mixed with oats. Most of the time in pints or larger, I'll layer oats, barley, millet and annual RGS in equal parts by volume.

It saves crazy amounts of time and effort. I made a couple quart jars last night using 1 1/3C oats and 215ml water. I'll take pictures tonight when I open the PC and G2G them. I no-prepped a 3lb bag of millet last night too, I'm going to try subtropicalis mycelium on it.

Yoshi is right.I do the no-prep too. I do 200g Oats and 145g water which gives me a 3/4 full jar and allows for some mighty fine shakin space. I am pretty new to mycology, but as soon as I found this measurement, everything just felt comfortable to me. I also decided to throw off all the doubts and try some G2G. Holy mackerel! This just works awesome! I took one jar of fully colonized oats and did 8 jars of g2g.8 jars'll give ya something to do in your spare time for sure.

I'm in tall cotton now!   yes yes...tall cotton!

Everyone does the tek that they feel comfortable with. I just feel comfortable with this one.

Hey everyone. I have been a member here for 20 years now but i was gone for a long time. I just got back into the hobby recently and have been playing with oats. Here is what I have come up with for doing oats in filter patch bags. The same method would scale down for jars, you would just have to do the math.....plus bags are the way to go. I can fit WAY more grains in the same pressure cooker using bags. anyways here is the absolute easiest grain method on earth lol

i take the smaller grain bags that are like 5x8x20 ish and then i get a 4 cup pyrex measuring cup and fill it to the brim where it is almost spilling out the top. its slightly over 4 cups and generally just a smidge under 2 lbs if you wanna weigh it. i dump that in the bag and add a tsp of gypsum, but that is optional. From there i use the measuring lines on a quart mason jar to measure out 750ml of hot water and it dump it into the bag. I stick my hand in the bag and mix everything thoroughly until all the grains are moist and the gypsum is mixed evenly. Then you just fold the bags and PC them for 90 min at 15 PSI. You could go the extra mile and add some diluted coffee water if you wanted, but it isn't needed at all. That's it. The end. You're all done while the other guys are still soaking, boiling, rinsing, and getting so stoned they forget about their soaking grains and have to start over because they started fermenting lol.

Thank you guys, nice write up Toby!

Here are the 2 quart jars, 1 1/3C dry oats 215ml water. The math was weird and I rounded up for convenience, should have rounded down, the grains are slightly damp. They also were PCed for 2hrs (with subs).

Next time. 1 1/3C/210ml.

I also no prepped 3lb of millet last night to spawn subtropicalis to for mycelium. Unfortunately, first new bag from new distributor ripped open at the seam where i had just sealed it and spilled some millet. It was mostly in the HEPA flow but Im not real happy. On the plus side I do have another jar of spawn and more dry millet. I forgot, millet in bags is 2:1 millet:water. For jars, slightly less water and add a pinch of gypsum or you'll be shaking forever.
