I have a quite mature (inoculated in April) agar cup that is so mature that the agar color is gone and there are a couple of pins starting. Would it be ill advised to try and use it to inoculate some grains,or do you think it would likely still be effective?

Maybe try cloning those pins, put a couple pieces old agar to new agar and then toss some cooked grains on top of what is left of the old agar.

I might try that next time I cook up some grains @YoshiTrainer . I was mainly just curious if anyone might know. I should have asked Sunday,as I just cooked some to inoculate and store in the refrigerator, and I could have made a little extra.

I went haywire once and created live tissue of just about every spore print in my library. It was really exciting to have all of that potential in the refrigerator all at once.

As you may know now from experience - cultivation projects take longer than agar culture and sometimes the plates hang around in the 'fridge for quite awhile.

I went forward and spawned projects with older, colonized agar. The mycelium didn't seem as robust or aggressive and the projects didn't do as well as expected.

Yoshi offers the best advice by recommending transfer and re-growth prior to spawning so you can have a better chance at a "fresh start".

This recent thread might be a good one to keep an eye on as you evaluate the efficacy of using older, stored culture:
