I have a lemon tree (and rose bush) I need to put wood mulch around, and was thinking I might put some hardwood/pine chip mix around them.

I also have ~6kg oak chips fully colonised with psilocybe cyanescens. I was thinking of killing 2 birds with one stone, but am not sure how Do I put the colonised stuff directly on the ground with a layer of plain chips on top?

Love that video! I think you have the right idea! In fact I bet that 6 kg will be enough for a pretty large area too. In the garden you might try wine caps if you want to take it to another species.

Ideally the chips should be layered between several layers of moistened cardboard. I wrote a detailed tek for cyanescens woodchip beds… it could be done more simply but this method is basically foolproof if followed to a T. It will at least provide a basic overview of the process:

Thanks :-) I'll soak some chips overnight. I (think) they will do pine although they prefer hardwood?

In my experience cyanescens doesn’t do well on softwoods with the exception of Douglas fir.

Noted.  I have enough hardwood to last a little while at least.
