Howdy folks,

been away for a long time. Good to be back.

I live in Kenya. A good friend of mine found what he thought were P cubensis in the Masai Mara, which is a national reserve in the southern part of the country famous for its insane wildlife. It's an interesting find because, sfaik, there are not many naturally occurring Psilocybe species / strains in this part of the world. If it is native then it goes a long way to supporting McKenna's stoned ape theory.  After all, the Great Rift Valley is where humankind kicked off.

Anyways, were calling them Blu Gnus.

So I got a print and did a basic PF Tek grow. Poor yields but very, very powerful.

I decided to up the ante and did a bulk grow. I used a popcorn spawn into OZZZ's horse-poo tek (great tek BTW, I recommend it). It all went swimmingly.

It hasn't fully colonised the tub, but I'd call it 99% there and the pins are already coming out crazy long (I guess about up to 1 inch) without colouring on the tips.

Question: is it safe to case with hydrated coir with such long pins, or am I better getting them to fruit and then case the second flush?

Best wishes from The Rift....xxx

If they’re pinning and fruiting I might not case them, you’ve got a good thing going so let the go and do their thing . If it ain’t broke don’t fix it ya know ?

You also said it isn’t totally colonized but is fruiting, makes me wonder if they’re trying to escape a contamination . Maybe, maybe could just be eager beavers.

I’m not an expert by any means but we can get the conversation going and other will chime in .

Very cool find thanks for sharing .

If you can get at least a fruit, pin something, you can clone it, or hopefully go to full maturation and get a print for further analysis. Usually, you want to case right when the knot dots (primordia) appear, and fully colonized, otherwise it will just continue growing thru the newly added Coco.  I'd leave it be if you have pins that long already, casing it great for thicker flushes, or drier climates, but not necessary.  Throw up a pic if you can, and the best of luck.   :meditate:

@Mycol & @MushLuvR

thanks for your responses! I'll go to fruiting and try get some decent quality prints.

Next time I'll be sure to case earlier. I'll try post a pic, or two later today when I open her up.

If this is, indeed, a new strain where could I send a print for ID, verification? Regrettably not too many good labs capable of such work out here in the sticks.

That looks like I'd not change anything, they're happy! Maybe the FAE, but that's it. Clone as much as possible!

Not sure about where to get that work done . How long did you let that incubate/colonize?

Add air, maybe loosen the poly a bit (looks tight from here,) for beautiful cap development.  Other than that, looks healthy and you are on your way.

That was in incubation for three weeks. We're in a drought at the moment, RH is pretty low.

Not sure about where to get that work done . How long did you let that incubate/colonize?
