a couple minutes of light bright enough to read by once a day
is enough
a few seconds in a bright windowsill works wonders
but don't overdo direct sunlight- too hot.

Well I bought a 6 inch florescent closet light and have it in the incubator. Turn it on for an hour twice a day.

Yeah, problem here is lingo. Do you mean the substrate? A casing is the layer you add to the substrate to promote pinning and it is a water resevoir for the maturing fruits. Either way if you are putting it into the fruiting chamber that means you are getting ready to initiate pinning so go ahead and add light.

If you are just now adding a casing layer then wait until the mycelium is poking through the casing layer (around 3 days) then stick it in the fruiting chamber and add light.

my jars were cased fully then put in a incubation chamber for 5 days or untill the top casing layer was colonized enough. i am now putting these fully colonized casings into the fruiting chamber. i have just read different articles and some ppl advise not to add light for a few days. about a hour ago i put them into the fruiting chamber with the light on. as of rite now i will be leaving the light on 24/7 because my house is without heat rite now and the terrarium needs the heat. it is maintaining 75%F. i will post pics as soon as i get some pins. also check out my post 2nd grow. thanks guys

I have always used set constant periods of light in the past. After watching the sunlight hit and move away from patches of wild mushrooms in the field out back, I just figured that it was best to give some kind of somewhat steady source for a few to several hours a day. This has worked for a long time for me now.

But now the room/house conditions are different (a different house). It has steam radiator heat as the house is over 80 years old. There are 2 inch metal pipes in the corner of the grow closet which carry steam heat up to the second floor. These pipes of course give off heat of their own. The closet stays a nice 71 -74 degrees without any lights on. Perfect for my Mexi cubes but when the lights go on (florecent) the temps go up to 78-80 degrees after a 2-3 hours. The higher temps tend to reduce the nummber of pins, so I have tried to keep track of just when the heat kicks on, and the warmer parts of the day, and the times in between when the heat is not on yet and the temps are cooler outside ( a tricky task to say the least).
And this is when I try to run the lights. So the light times are on and off for different lengths of time at different times of the day.

I know the babies don't need a lot of light time to do their thing, but the question is if the light periods can be broken up into small and irregular periods and still get proper growth ?

Thanks, HD.

so a foaf has a couple aquariums sitting under a giant 100 gallon aquarium. he has a crocheted blanket with lots of holes in it draped in front of the cakes aquariums in a normally lit room, think that they will get enough lite thru the blanket or no?

probably, if the room gets well lit a few times a day.
wouldn't hurt though to give extra when opportune

You also may notice that they won't be stand up straight either. Getting them even just a bit like Hippie said can't hurt either.
