I read in another post how putting a timered light into a terrarium is difficult due to corrosion caused by high humidity and high temps caused by incandescent lights.

If you wanted more light in a stealth grow like a cooler could one not use a CFL and rig it up like hippies heat bomb? Maybe throw in some dessicate to keep it dry, you could have the equivelent of 60 watts in a 14 watt bulb. Don't know if it would make a difference in yield but you could manipulate light specturms and use a timer.

Any opinions?

I did something similar once, it worked well, but had a downside. The mushrooms didn't grow up straight, as they bent toward the light. I just put a strand of white christmas lights in a half gallon mason jar, put a lid on, fed the cord through a hole in the lid and it worked great. Even gave some heat in winter when I needed it.

FOAF if planning on using the PFTEK method. It calls for and indirect light source for 6-12 hours a day. It also says that flouresents work great as well. His question is "Does any light source work?" and if so do some work better than others? Much thanks.

natural indirect sunlight is best imo. and flouresents are second best imo.
i would try for either of these, but if not any type of light would work....

Light is light... I used to have a little 6" battery powered fluorescent and an adapter cord so I could run it off of a timer in the wall. Very cheap, but I've lost the power cord and switched to an incandescent night light and it seems to be just as good.

Hey all, I was wondering how long you needed to expose colonized cakes to a lightsource per day for maximum effect. also is there any particular type (halogen, led, etc) that works better? And if you are growing invitro how long per day do you give them light? thanks

dosnt need much light at all. as for invitro i give it light from start of germination, still only needs very little light.

I have had fruits from cakes which were exposed to light only long enough to mix them with the bulk sub I was using. Only checking them periodically. They also got short intervals of light while they were being cased. The whole fruting process finished in a dark closet(They did get short intervals of light when I was introducing FAE). They grew every bit as good as the ones that got natural daytime light(the FC were near a window).

Light is generally used to initiate pinning. Although my FOAF tries to replicate a 12/12 light cycle, they need very little if any. Light just tells them which way is up.

Plenty of light is best to innitiate pinning as above post stated. Once you got your pinset, just a few hours is fine. I hear people say indirect sunlight is best.

how important is it to have the light source directly over the top of your FC? for instance a dub tub or monotub?a foaf is building shelves for his project and has a lot of wood at his disposal, could he just use one light for the room even tho it would only reach the bottom tubs on the sides? or should he plan on putting a light on each shelf?

The light will show the fruits which way is up...I have had times where, when the light was on one side of the fc the fruits all grew tilted to that side(the window which provided light was on that side)...The tops of the FC weren't clear plastic though..the sides were. The fruits grew at a 45 degree angle even.
If your top is clear and the sides are solid, they should grow vertical just fine. No matter where the light is placed (within reason of course). IMO Only ambient light is really needed anyways. As a matter of fact I have never used artificial light for any of my grows..only indirect sunlight.

not too concerned about the angle they grow, more about whether the growth will be sporadic across the surface or if even pinning will still occur. sides and lids are both clear

You should be ok with wherever the light placement is within reason as stated above. YOu may want to black out the area where the substrate is in the tub so that the shrooms do not grow out of the aside and bottom. For instance placing a cut peice of green garbage bag on bottom of tub

one other thought, ive seen people say that pinning is improved with exposure to sunlight, would a lizard light be better than a fluorescent? i know that lizards need a specific type of bulb to get like uv rays i think, otherwise they can die, at least some types, does anyone know of any difference between a fluorescent and a uv fluorescent?
