If I colonize jars of BRF/Verm, will they do well if I case them with good compost/straw?

you could break up your cakes, mix them with pasturized compost/straw mix, let it colonize for a while, then put a peat/verm casing layer on it :) there is so many ways to go, check in the archives for many many teks on making casings.

exactly what sin said. you dont case with poo you spawn to it. the difference being that when you spawn to the poo the myc colonizes the poo and uses it for the nutes. a casing layer isnt utilized for nutes, it works on diff levels. one being it helps provide moisture to the substrate under it, and it also helps to keep contams on the surface of the casing, while below the myc is nice and safe, and doesnt need to compete for nutes.

if your going to use peat, add a dash of lime to help level out the ph(im pretty sure this is one of the reasons), and also to help ward off contams

you can but coir has been said to cause overlay. some people have experiences they myc actually start to colonize the coir becuase it is apparently higher in nutes than peat. reg verm works good too btw

yes, when using verm as a casing layer, pasturization nor sterelization of said casing layer is not required.
