I like how closer in the red light district you can walk by a grocery store, and the next store over in the alley you find a woman behind glass waving at you... lots of local brewed beers....

Hey! Thats my grocery store! :) (Really, the Nieuwemarkt Albert Heijn) Yes, I walk by prostitutes on the way to the store...
Seriously though, I'd like to know what our local beers are. I'd love to try them, but as far as I know there really isn't a local beer culture here. We just have the national suck-beers (heineken, Juliper, Hertog-Jan, Grolsch, etc) that all taste and look like Budweiser. I think the best beer (that is widely available) in the Netherlands is Palm, a Belgian beer.

A friend of mine who lives in Holland told me that if I come over there, I'm prohibited from walking around or using a bike... that I have to take a taxi. She says y'all drive crazy :P

haha nope I haven't been outside of the States yet except for one trip into the Canadian border when I was 12. I'm half-dutch (on my mother's side), so I would like to visit sometime when I have the money (preferably around the time of the cannabis cup) but it'll take at least a year before i'll be able to save that type of money up

Really cool pics.... I like how closer in the red light district you can walk by a grocery store, and the next store over in the alley you find a woman behind glass waving at you... it's something unexpected, or out of place feeling.
Did you stop at the koffeeshops or any bars? lots of local brewed beers
please post more pics if you got some...

closer? lol this apartment was on the first street back from main canal in RLD. It was so noisy from people on the street all speaking different languages, and the dealers allways right under our windows flagging down clients,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,charlie got coke, charlie got x, every time someone walked by...they really were out of hand.

the windows are great ! me and Mrs went hooker shopping one night, what a blast ! nuff said........

Stopped by all the coffee shops, then we met up with "bad doobie", not D3 btw, but a joint of thai that absolutly slayed us, ugliest weed in the city but it kicked both of our asses ! Mostly we smoked hash of all kinds, that was really a treat !

went to the rembrant house for some culture, it was cool. The art is so well done that it actually inspires emotions of all kinds. Ive never seen paintings so realistic, some of them were better that photographs ! no shit, it was amazing.

took a couple of canal cruises, one at night, all I can say about that is "eeeexxxcceellleeennnttt !!!!!!!

I wish one of you A'dam residents would explain this, it was right outside a church, imbeded in the sidewalk.
people would gather arroung it from time to time and I swear they were praying over it. Id really like to know if there is a significance to it.

Stupid people get taken advantage of everywhere... but the Netherlands is one of the safest countries in the world, much more safe (statistically) that the US...
I partially grew up here and have lived in the old city for years and years and years. I think even the bike theft problem is a myth. Every time I hear of/see a bike stolen IT IS NOT LOCKED! I have a really expensive bike that I leave outside locked up, its never been stolen or tampered with. So, in my mind, the crime rate is so low that people are even willing to leave their bikes out, unlocked, in the capital city!

There are some local crazies/junkies that will chase around a scared looking tourist, but that has even subsided since I first moved into my apartment 7 years ago.

the most annoying thing I found was the very poor service everywhere
when you're in a restaurant you better order everything you may want all at once because no one will every come back to your table to ask if you want anything else, like another drink, or dessert or whatever
I stood at many a bar waving the barkeep over to get a drink and was flatly ignored, over and over
but all the dealers in tha coffee shops were eager to help out

At one place we ate, I had ordered my food, and saw at another table someone had french fries, hell it reminded me of state food so i wanted to order some fries, the waiter told me no, that it only came with a certain meal, and wouldn't let me order it.
i was younger then and with my parents, so i didn't press the issue...
