Easy to store, sanitize, move around, dunk and see the progress of mycelium..
These little guys seem to produce very well for the amount of substrate they hold..
Also convenient for comparing different methods and formulas for growing.
The isolation of contaminants is easier, as you can see everything +loosing one tray has no effect on the rest..
There are a few shrooms that grow in the tray bottom but its simple to just pop the cake out and pick em..
Here's some multispore GT from yesterday...

It sucks when you make a huge tray and a spot of the green gets in. Like you said, with more smaller trays contamination is easily isolated.

I get 3-4 flushes and really watch out for stuff on the sides and don't want to dig stuff out between flushs.
The black paint idea seems like it would still let light in.

It's very easy to harvest the bottom feeders by submerging the tray in a pot of water after cleaning off the topside harvest - the cake just floats up
out of the container and they are easily picked off ...Pop er back in and wait for round 2.. ..There really aren't many that grow down there...
Being able to see the mycelium grow, out weighs the minor effort of harvesting imo...Did you ever wonder what the hells going on under that casing layer..heh...it's re-assuring to see that all is well ...
There are two things i do differently that i believe helps with the pin set..
First, these trays have drainage holes so i dont have to be all cautious with the amount of watering..
Also i dont use a sprayer to hydrate ,but rather a squeezable plastic bottle
with a narrow tube glued into the lid..I just dribble the water gently but liberally. ..The excess drains out...
As the sub approaches pinning time i increase the amount of water and
continue as the mushies are developing ..Dribbling the water will not cause aborts at any stage, like spraying seems to...I quit watering before the caps open...

I don't alway pop and dunk but on a dry casing I have been known to pull out a syringe without the needle and rehydrate... similiar to the dribble thing. Not many aborts that away.

Is it because the water may be a few degrees different in a spray bottle that shocks them a little that makes them abort?
