How are you storing the specimen?

So far Ive kept them in a TiT

has the myc begun to sector at all?
I noticed that rosin is soluble in alcohol. might be a nice way to fill a petri dish. a cold pour similar to agar then let the alcohol evaporate. :eusa_thin

I was thinking of trying isolation work. Maybe try to swipe the strip across a glass caserole dish and use it like that.
On the "white" Flystrips there was sectoring .The pic shows a piece of brown/red strip I used that only to get a pic of the process. The "white" strips are the best to use and if planning to try Id recommend the "white" ones.
Im unsure of the "ingredients" of the "white" strips this brand

The brown ones work but the white ones are far superior.

The more I look into the catchmaster type"white" flystrips it seems that they contain an adhesive that is not Rosin I think this adhesive is why the white strips are better.
When I first used the brown or Rosin based flystrip there was some hesitation on the myc to grow. But with the white strips from catchmaster the myc grew quickly.

you say the white is superior-
i don't want to know what you think causes that [glue type]
but instead i want to know
why you think the white is better, i.e. because it sectored ?
or in what way is the white out-performing the brown ?
you mention it grew a bit faster, in how many cases ?
i see no pix of the white above ?

You know I use to work for a steel company and we would hang fly strips in the bathroom. Believe me it was a nasty ass bathroom. Anyway, they would hang for months covered in flies but I never once saw the first sign of a contaminant mold or fungus.

I don't know if these things could ever take the place of agar as far as isolating strains go but they definitely could be used to quickly clean up a spore print if other contaminants will not grow there. If someone could get that stuff into a dish so it could be cut like agar then isolating strains would be easier.

I agree, 3! Very significant. This would eliminate the need for some serious clean air equipment or working in an uncomfortable glove box.

Dirty prints could be germinated then moved to a different medium?

Very interesting thread.

You can get Rosin in quantity quite easily. Climbers/gymnasts use powdered rosins to help with grip. Musicians use small blocks of rosin to rub violin (and other stringed instrument) bows.

i would not assume the rosin is the key ingredient,
perhaps it's the tape adhesive itself providing nutrition
which invites the question-
could spores be scrapped onto ordinary adhesive tape and germinate ?

Took a print of KS and touched it to the
tape about 4 times and hung it from the
lid of a quart jar with 4 cottonballs in the
bottom hydrated with 3% peroxide.
I will be heading out to buy fly strips
later today to try out.

hmmm...i gotta try this one. I think it might be the rosin that the spores/mycelium likes. Its basicly plant resin, usually from pine or other conifers.

it might be
but at this poit
that's just an assumption,
a working hypothesis perhaps
but there are two ingredients mentioned
and adhesive is the other possibility
as some is mildly nutritious.

Since invitro is trying the tape by itself, i'll try to get some rosin from the music store and see if that works by itself. Who knows, maybe its the combination of the two? one way to find out...

This is all very interesting, I think I will also run out for some fly paper as well. Also I wonder if those traps which catch mice with the rosin or adhesive would work? you know the ones that make the mouse stick. If they do then it may be alot easier to do transfers because of the wider areas. Also would allow for more sectoring,

I just did a print scraping onto one this morning the pic is not very good. Should be some good growth in 5-8 days then ill try to get a decent pic of.

I think its more toward the adhesive than the Rosin that is beneficial
I say that because the myc grew faster and better on the white ones.
And although im not 100% I dont think the white ones have Rosin in them. I emailed the company (giving praise and asking whats in there flystrips that make them work so well) With no reply yet. LOL
Isolation,sectoring all that is new to me I simply cloned then transfered to an LC using this method but spores do germ on it so...

presumably fresh still moist spores would work better for this
than old desiccated ones.

Interesting thread, I have a box full of Catchmaster insect glue traps. It would be ridiculous for me to try an experiment having no more experience than I do, but if someone would like a couple traps to try,PM me.
