Next time i'll try a dry defat, maybe it'll will remove some of the yellow tint ? that's the only thing i didn't like about the straight base tek...:eusa_snoo

I never bothered defatting with A/B extractions, however this new base tek really pulls the yellow oil out of the bark, i'm sure a dry defat will help, if not then a good wash & recrstallization will clean it up..

I'd be very curious to know what the final weight of the cleaned spice is. While that yeild is quite good, tannins and fats from the root could make up a (signifigant?) portion. If you do a dry defat of the same bark, let us know what happens there.

Thanks much condo_pygmy!

PS My FOAF nearly always defats with A/B and gets clean, white crystals on freeze-precipt that smoke very smooth.

Yes Entheogen23, a dry defat is a must for this new base tek, however when swim did the standard A/B extractions using ascorbic acid, didn't need to defat, got clean white crystals everytime, but this new tek defiently calls for a good defatting, the base tek pulls alot of the tannins out of the bark & when doing naptha extractions it's piss yellow, i was able to clean it up a bit with a sep funnel ammonia wash prior to freezing, even after recrystallization the yellow tint is still present, Over at the Nook "FOAF" used active charcoal to clean up some yellow spice, looks like a very good way to remove unwanted color.

With standard A/B, you just add NP solvent to the filtered (bark-free) acidic solution (FOAF uses distilled naptha, but some say xylene pulls more crap/oils out). Repeat 3X. FOAF keeps the left over naptha and separates off the fatty crap and re-distills the naptha.

The charcoal method of cleanup seems like a good one. Seems to be standard practice in many lab manuals for purifying alkaloids.
