my FOAF made a casing a few weeks ago, probably just shy of 2 weeks ago. there was some myc growth. He used corn cob bedding, brf, and verm. it's been kept between 72 and 76 degrees. He had it in a fc for about 4 days (95rh 75(f) )

after about 4 or 5 days in the fc the myc started looking excessivly thick (like reallly thick compared to other myc he's seen). he took it out and isolated it in case it was caused by some sort of contam. He hit it with some highly diluted bleach and the myc growth stopped for a few days (attributed it to the bleach). the cakes that were in the fc with it haven't shown any signs of contam (it's been over a week).
a few days after spraying it with the bleach water, it started growing very very fast and very thick. it's also pinning like crazy. yesterday, there were hardly any pins, today, there could be close to 100+ (prob. exagerating, but there are a lot)

He was wondering if anyone knew if this was normal, or if anyone's seen anything like it. I'll be getting pictures and updating this tomorrow.

any input would be awesome

thick sounds very different, yes some pics would help. has the mycelium changed color in any way?

could be mere coincidence
or you might be seeing a fairly rare phenomenon
that i and others have observed a few times before,
where by some unknown mechanism
a bleach episode seems to tripper
extreme growth spurt.
might happen 1 in 100 times
so don't expect to see it often.

The myc color hasn't changed, it's still bright white.
Here are some pics.

I am going to try this bleach effect and see what I come out with, maybe it will tripper some growth. It would be great if for some reason it would pick up growth in some form. Great insight hip. Always great to hear from a vet on such topics.

I don't know if this applies, but I have had really thick ropes occur several times in conjunction with verticillium contamination. I don't know if it's coincidence or what, but it occurred with different strains on different grows, each time infected with Vert, sometimes on WBS, other times on BRF. However, I didn't bleach it, and I didn't notice growth spurts. Perhaps the growth spurt is due to killing off an infection that's holding it back somewhat. The ropy mycelium I had was really noticeably thick (I have some right now, but no camera, sorry), so I wanted very much to culture it, but the Vert keeps making me hesitate. But as I said, it might just be coincidence.

Excellent theory.

You need to give that project lots of light, FAE and keep the humidity at 90-95%. It's extremely close to becomming overlaid. Good luck man.

Have you had other projects do this?

I'm wondering about your fresh air exchange rates. Perhaps your environment is a little off and the bleach is shocking the myc out of "go go grow" phase and into "pin pin fruit" phase.

FOAF says: I'm going to keep it isolated, and keep up with the FAE. no real way to monitor it's rh atm, but i have a little fc setup that'll let me do that. This little casing is small enough that i can keep it by a window without it being noticed, so it's getting indirect sunlight (woot!, at least one proj. is.)

so starting tonight it's going to be getting 95%rh, 75(f) and indirect sunlight. so hopefully it'll start fruiting in the near future. I'll update with pics when anything changes.

thanks for ya'lls responses :D

hypothesis actually
and it might be correct.
that would at least help explain why it's so unpredictable.:eusa_clap

Quick update, Everything seems to be going fine :eusa_pray, it's been in the fc for approx. 7 days. Everything seems to be going fine, except there are some overlaid parts which I need to fix. but the non-overlaid parts are doing well :)
The pics are from yesterday, today, i checked, and there are quite a few more

I have seen bleach dunks make a growth spurt with
bigger shrooms after. I think there is something to it.
I aint no scientist though.

yeah, it'd take a scientist to pin down exactly how it works,
it'd be great if we knew
how to make it happen at will
but i have never been able to,
just seems to do it when it pleases.
