is there any advantage to steam over water bath other than the draining aspect?

Well, not really Leary, but not draining is a big advantage IMO.
Typically, when using the hot water bath method, I would drain the sub mix over night.
Using the steam method, one only has to wait until the sub mix has cooled before using it. This can shave off hours.
One could steam their sub and make a tray all in one evening. :dance:

Good idea. Nearly all of the large mushroom farms use steam to pasteurize their compost and, or casing. 145 degrees seems to be the temperature favored.

Wallpaper steamer? Hmmmm.

yeah, you can rig up one via hose to syrofoam cooler and do decent amounts pretty fast and clean.

thx. typically, i dont mind the wait but i can see the advantage. also seems that maintaining a constant temp w/ steam might be easier.
