Hey everybody, I haven't been around for a long time...

I had a son and haven't been active in the hobby for well over a year. I did, however, get the itch. The mushrooms were calling me.

I decided to try a double tub for the first time.

I took two 20qt. tubs and drilled (4) 1.25" holes in each. I found some really old horse manure that had been on top of a plastic bag in my back yard for over a year. Pasteurized about a gallon's worth of it--didn't even have a thermometer, just used my finger! Too hot to keep my finger in, yet still far from boiling. Perfect.

The wbs was innoculated with an unmarked spore print. Why I didn't label it, I don't know but if i kept it around, it must have been a good one....

Anyway, i spawned two quarts to the poo...added about a quart of strait vermiculite for a thin casing (didn't need much due to the micro-climate of the double-tub)...and closed it up.

I didn't incubate the casing.

Never misted, never fanned.

Just closed it p and waited.

So here's what I got:

One flush came out to exactly three ounces dry...

Turns out the spores were a pointy capped B+ i used to grow. They have a distinctive cap and out of the strains i have, I know it was those...

Wow! Very nice! Goes to show you what a little neglect can do for these bad boys. So many people want to mess with them sooo much that sometimes it ruins the grow.

Yeah, nice work. Sometimes the best care is to leave it alone.

I'd be willing to spare two or three if anybody wants to trade....

The only way I differed from the tek was to add a thin casing prior to closing it up...

Cubes are extremely forgiving. I hardly believe they can grow in the conditions they can...

Anyway, I didn't come up with this, just followed directions. But really, it doesn't get any easier than this! Besides the fact that if you put it together in a clean envirionment, contams have little chance of getting in.

That's the main reason i did it to begin with. I've tried growing a couple times in my new abode, but always got the green. Turns out there was mold growing in the crawl space under my house. I've since put down a vapour barrier (4mm polyethlene) to keep moisture down.

But with a little Oust and rubbing alcohol, I had no problems...

Oh, by the way, just make sure you use a tried and true fruiting strain.

The strains I still have around, i still have for a reason. I prefer the American strains (yeah, I'm prejudiced!) Eq, B+, SA, etc. They just fruit so much better for me than SE Asian strains...

hey, thanks Hippie.

I appreciate the nomination, although it's probably the last one I'd vote for...

Elf's got like 200 pan's in one pic. You just can't beat that...!

Did you just crumble the old dried manure & pasturize it? Did you have to screen it? I have some aged horse poo I just got through crumbling & was wondering if I should screen it.

I just picked out a few weeds that were sprouting, and there were a couple bugs...

I picked out what I could by hand is all. The only reason the poo didn't become part of the earth is the bag under it...Gotta go get some more one of these days. I wa thinking of trying this with about 75% straw to 25% coir as substrate...

Straw's just a good substrate...

Look up straw grows on here, you'll find lots of great stuff! I do think it contams easier if you don't get it completely colonized quickly enough...

It can kick out some monsters though!

I got a few fruits from a second flush, but nothing to write home about...

The lack of a significant casing layer hurt the most. I should have dunked.

I gave it a good misting, but with so little casing to absorb water, it could only do so much...

Some decent sized fruits, though....
