This is my second attempt at cultivating with BRF cakes. The jars are almost all fully colonized and i would like to use them for a small casing. Being my first i would like to try strictly vermiculite on bottom and on top. Would i need to sterilize the vermiculite first, and if so, is there a microwave method? Any other advice regarding this casing method would be greatly appreciated.

If its a new or well sealed bag, it's not ness to sterilize as long as the water is clean...On the other hand - it can't hurt either...
Welcome to Topia..!....Gluk with the casing ,,dont lay it on too thick and use the more chunky verm on top for better aeration..

Hey everyone this is our first post. However we have been reading posts and threads for some time now as we find very usefuls advice and info here. Thanks to all who have shared there successes and failures.:eusa_clap
Anyway, here is our story. We began our first attempt to grow cambodian and BHT shrooms about 3 1/2 weeks ago. I say attempt because we have not our first flush yet. We had a jar innoculated with Cambodian spores that was not doing so well. It had only a few spots of mycelium, while all of the others were growing very quickly. Due to my husbands lack of patience and desire to save it he cased it. Well the mycelium has skyrocketed and there is rhizomorphic growth everywhere. It is actually doing the best out of all of the casings. One can barely see the manure/top soil mix on top. When should we start to see pins since it was cased at less than 100% colonized? (Will post pic when camera is located).Sign....CoyoteMesc's wife

It's tough to tell you much without pictures, but since you started the fruiting cycle before 100% colonization, chances for contamination are very high. But if your casing layer is fully covered in white you should see something soon--hyphal knotting may already be happening (wherein primordia form).

Yeah..I need to find or buy another cam. Last night I saw what I hope is knots....lots and lots of them. They are about the size as candy sprinkles for birthday cakes.."REAL CAKES" that is, and their really WHITE. Some in clusters of 7 to 10 or so...:eusa_pray

Sounds like knots to me. Very soon, some of those will start to lengthen and then they will become primordia! GOOD PINSET VIBES YOUR WAY!!!

 GL with your grow! Hopefully yours doesn't end in aborts like mine did. Whoever says aborts are more potent, I definately disagree. When I D.E.C, I used regular tap (after I boiled it for about 15 minutes) and vermiculite right out of the bag (just opened. But in the future when I attempt my 2nd grow, I will probably sterilize the vermiculite to be on the safe side. No one likes losing all that hard work to contamination.

Aborts are definetely more full of "magic"....In the cosmic/karma scheme of things they should be too...Alot more work to get enuf of them to get a dose!

"Whoever says aborts are more potent, I definately disagree."

U need to start agreeing, because they are full of magic. Next time you decide to dose, take 1.5 dry grams of abhorts and 1.5 dry grams of mature shrooms and set them side by side. Ingest one pile, wait a week or two, then ingest the other pile. See if you can tell the difference. I've let several friends try this before because they never wanted to eat "those little things," but I always would. They always wondered why i tripped harder than they did, now they know.

It's not neccesary to sterilize the verm but you should as a safety precaution.

From my experience with straight verm, don't do it!!
I had no success. All of my casings, dried out before I knew it.
I very much suggest the coco coir/hydrated lime/verm mix. You don't have to pastuerize the coco coir and the verm should already be steralized once you get it (provided you haven't opened the bag yet). And of course if you have a glovebox, mix all the ingredients inside the box.

On the contrary, you should sterilize coir (unless it is B'cuzz or General Hydroponics, or some other pre-tested brand).

Many brands of coir for planting/hydroponics are actually intentionally infected with trich (and other things) by the manufacturer.
