Foud this strange fungi the other day growing on a decaying stump.
When disturbed it let off a thick cloud of spores.

wow. thats some crazy looking stuff. you know what kinda tree it was growing off of? what kinda climate was it found in?

did the spores just kinda dust off or did they actually project themselves out into the air with force?

Found Hardiness Zone 6b - 7a
Found growing on the top of an unknown treestump, presumed to be a large conifer, however quite decomposed so thats not certain.

The spores appeared like they 'dusted off' but the sheer amount was quite unexpected. I wish I had my better camera, for the way this fungi attached to the wood was pretty amazing. Each 'tentacle' was attached to the wood by a few human-hair thin 'legs' that looked somewhat similar to pin mold when sporulating. However after repeated flicks, and trillions of spores gone with the wind, not one of them was dislodged.

I thought it looked like an anemone myself.

I believe what you might have there is the sporangia phase of a slime mold.
sound gross...eh? Basically when the slime mold runs out of food, the structure youre seeing is the reproductive phase.
heres a pic of sporangium from a slime mold...its towards the bottom of the page on the right.

if you do a google image search for this

Stemonitis splendens

you should see some familiar pictures

sounds/looks dead on!

Damn slime molds have wrecked a lot of oyster projects for me. When the "spawn" all came from a bag of mulch. No matter what I did, slime slime slime.

I knew it was a slime mold, but couldn't find a good description of it.

Good job Greys!

If youre interested in slime molds George Barron is the man! He has a macrofungi field guide called " Mushrooms of Northeast America: midwest to new england" but most of his research and papers are about slime molds.

Oh btw the common name for this...."chocolate tube slime", kinda has a ring to it....
