Popcorn seems popular but I hear good things about rye and WBS.

in reality you can use any of them with pretty much the same resultes imho. you can even do brf jars, and just break the cakes up into the straw.
mixing anything with straw should give you good results. how did you decide to do the straw? log, casing, LB tek?

I have used rye berries and wbs (wild bird seed) recently and had no problems. I am pretty much an intermediate mushroom grower and have had no problems moving from PF cakes to grains, the only problems I ran into is overlay on casings.
I have avoided most problems because I read alot before I try a new tek and I follow the instructions to the dot. Expecially concerning sterilizing myself and the worksite.

alot of people seem to really like rye berries... i personally have never tryed them... but i have heard good things... seems like it colonizes as quick as popcorn... but not as readily available to everybody
WBS seems about like rye grass... some people seem to have problems with water content... which can bread bacteria... longer colonization times.. but many more innc. points then popcorn or rye..
popcorn is nice b/c it colonizes quickly and is cheap... there seem to be some problems getting the water content right some times... which can lead to bateria contams... when broken up for for spawning alot of bair kernal gets exposed which can open the dor to contams..
hope these helped :)

the search function doesn't work on the archives anymore
the search engine here can search the archives we exported over from discus,
but it's true that the search engine on the discus board is temporarily disabled.
one can still find the needed info by following the logical chain of topics/sub-topics there

what everyone considered their favorite substrate to use as spawn on to straw and why is it your favorite? A foaf needs to get prepared for his first try at this. He needs a good contam resistant tek.
don't over look crumbled/powdered brf [pf] cakes,
they are very easy, highly resistant to contams [more than any grain]
and once finely powdered will go as far as any grain.
they make good spawn for straw, too.

one of the OG mycotopia memebers
name OldTimer... seemed very pleased using ground up BRF to spawn straw, matter of fact he swore by them... and i'd immagine that a ground up PF cake could create a LOT of innculation points, cheap and also much more contam resistant then grains... but it does require the extra step of grinding..
i tryed them a few times with now luck.. but looking back it could have been a number of things other then the spawn...

i've been very happy with rye grass fallowing your tek... i normaly spawn 1qt of rye grass to a 9X13x2.5 pan of straw and poo, i'm sure i could streach it alot further but i get 100% in 5 days... it covers so quick contams never have a chance... haven't lost a tray yet :)... no boil.. no soke, no simmer... just measure your jars.. add water and shake... put on lids and filters and your ready to go :) thanks RR

Is there a signifcant speed increase?

Has anyone tried adding a bit of poo and/or straw to their spawn to "train" the myc? Is there a signifcant speed increase?
With Cubensis, it's probably best to keep bulk substrates and grains seperate.
I've seen it done before when cultivating Panaeolus species...Trops or Cyanescens.
The reason for this is that Pans are usually fruited on a bulk substrate like straw or manure.
Cubs fruit on grains or bulk subs...By adding Poo with PF jars, Pans get a head start ...
like you said, it gets them used to it. I've tried the recipe below, and honestly
it didn't work any better then straight BRF and verm.
Here is a substrate recipe some growers use.....
5 cups of vermiculite
3 cups manure
10 tablespoons of brown rice flour
2 cups of water
This will make 10-12 half pint jars of substrate.

I ran 3 parallel tests with three strains and found pinning occured 2-3days ahead of the non spiked jars...This idea originated with P. Stamets --Its a good'n...
You only need a pinch in each jar...

thats pretty cool golly
that little sample taste gets them reved up and ready to move
when the big meal is served of the same dish.

I've just spawned a bag with 800ml of wbs spawn into 5.6L of combined PC'd wbs, verm & coir. That's a 1:7 ratio. I've found that popcorn jars work very well with a 1:6 ratio (ran out of glovebox space). The Q is, assuming that the contam threat is low due to PC'd materials & a glovebox, how low can I go with spawn? Could I get away with a 1:14 ratio..? That would have me making a 6L bag with one 500ml jar!
(feel the greed, eh? does bulk do this to people?)
