Mycotopia Web Archive: Spawn-Bags

First, save up and get an impulse sealer. It will save you alot of time.
Secondly, Id g2g into the spawnbag. It will allow you alot more spawn, alot more quickly.

G2G will also save bags because of the higher volumes of substrate in each.

yeah i was thinking of using thick myc syringes and injecting the bags.i know impulse sealer would def save on time.very true that g2g would save in time since theres allot more subtrate in the bags it would def take awhile to colonize.thanx for the link highflyer.....peace...

Whats the difference between an impulse sealer and a food vacuum sealer? The food vacuum sealers are for PE (poly ethylene?). Do you think they would work on the PP (poly propylene?) spawn bags? My only concern is that perhaps the food sealers don't get hot enough to fuse the PP spawn bags??

the foodsaver brand is an impulse sealer hooked into a vacuum channel. works the same exact way, just has the electronics to pull the vacuum then seal the bag. some impulse sealers are more easily adjusted to thickness and type of plastic.

Thanks,
Just wasn't sure if the heating element could deal with both types of plastic. A store nearby has a sale for the food-saver type - $25.

I don't use either. Electrical cable ties work great for sealing, and they can be cut off so you can reuse the bag. The black ones are rated for high temp and don't melt in the PC. Bailing wire also works if you twist it tight. Just a suggestion as they're cheap.

Thanks for the tip Rodger, I'll give that a shot also. I was thinking of a sealer just so I could seal some air in the bag, not sure if it's really necessary though but would make shaking a little easier. Can you pull the tie tight enough to make it truly airtight?

a decent impulse sealer is a handy device with many uses,
mine has adjustable temp control so it handles many grades/thicknesses
of plastic.
i do leave some air in spawn bags,
no vacume needed unless you're storing shrooms.

Have you checked e-bay or the local office stores in your area?
I checked Staples on line and they seemed a bit pricey. But i would bet that you could more than likely find one in your price range on e-bay.
Best of luck to you!

My friend put in a bid on it, If it is what Hip linked me then it is well worth it. Those same ones on Uline are like 150-400 bucks a piece I am thinking that spawn bags are way less trouble than jars as far as stealth. I have a feeling that if uncle sam finds my friends mason jar collection it might be a tip off. Any other uses for impulse sealers would be appreciated. Thanks! :)
