Sphagnum Moss Vs Sphagnum Moss Peat vs FTD vs Meijer
Posted 08 April 2005 - 10:00 PM
IT is "FTD" brand and I cannot find a reference on-line. It is sold at Meijer. It CLEARLY states "Spashnum Moss" and says PEAT nowhere on the bag, BUT it is tiny fibersalmost muddy when wet, more muddy than coir. I thin it IS peat, but that FTD is dumb. :)
Also, I am trying a lazy man "TEK" with this.
1/2 bag FTD Verm (4 Dry Qts. is 1/2 the bag)
1/2 bag FTD Sphagnum Moss (4 Dry Qts. is 1/2 the bag)
1 cup Hydrated Lime
3 Gallons Boiling Water
3 Tablespoons bleach
1. Mix Lime, bleach, 1 Gallon water. Stir it up in 5. Gallon bucket.
2. dump in the rest of the stuff and mix WELL.
3. cover with blankets and keep it around 160-190F for an hour-ish.
4. I am disgusted to report that I also added 2 teasponons Banrot.
5. Drain/squeeze excess water.
Is this shit goinng to be money for a casing layer?

You want peat moss, not the sphagnum moss for lining hanging plant baskets.
I guess the poiny of the thread is that FTD mis marks the packages.
They only sell spaghnum, BUT it is not basklining stuff, more like dirt.
Anyway, well see since I used it.

So I went to thr Depot today amd got Lambert Peat Moss.. you know what it said on the other fucking side of the package??? huh??? Canadian Spaghnum. Never says both together on on side...GRrrr...
The stuff in the FTD bag marked 'Spaghnum Moss' is strikingly like the Peat Moss/Canadian Spaghnum I got today... go figure.
Well, I am smarter now at least.
