PE cake/bulk grow

ok, so I mentioned in a previous thread about doing some bulk tubs using intact cakes... this is nothing new.. I've seen it a few times on here with bulk and coir. basically, I laid down about an inch of past. bulk substrate about 2:1 Hpoo/straw in the bottom of a 54 qt. tub. Then set 15 1/2 pint PF cakes on top of that. Then I just encased the cakes in more bulk substrate. there is about an inch of bulk sub. all around the cakes. This came out of the fact that I bought a shit ton of brf and need to use the stuff... I don't want to throw it away and waste it so I thought I'd see how it went if I combine the two methods of cakes and bulk. But I'm too damn lazy to "crumble" (whoever said that you "crumble" a cake first is an idiot.. they don't crumble. lol j/k whoever you are..) or chop up 45 cakes so this is what I did. so far, so good... this is about a week in.. it was slow going at first, but at about day 5 the rhizos really kicked it up and are now colonizing at about a 1/2" per day. I made three tubs and the subs are about three inches thick....
heres the first bin I made...

that bin was done all nice and I took my time.. Then I realized I was on a timeline and had to go to school soon... so I tried to kick it up a notch... heres the second tub...

That one still looks pretty good... But then I was reeeeeallly in a hurry and didn't want to have to come home and work on it so I got kind of sloppy for the third one....

I used too much bulk substrate on that top edge.. you can see that there is about another 1.5" left for that myc to colonize up there. I was afraid that it wasn't going to colonize it in time so I just sterilized a spoon with iso alc and spooned that side out after I took that pic... heres what it looks like now....

theres also something fishy happening in that top right corner cake area (two pics up and in the bottom left corner of the pic directly above this statement), it's not quite colonizing like the others.. but that may just be that I used more substrate there.. we'll see what it does.. not really worried if I lose the cake area or the bin actually.. I have more mushies than I can give away atm. lol
I figure these bins will start knotting and then pinning in about three days which is when I'll case em.. I'm expecting large clusters in the area that is already colonized (directly above where the cakes are sitting).. maybe then by the second flush the areas that aren't colonized right now (between where the cakes are sitting) will have clusters.. we'll see eh. :) I'll definitely let yall know.

Although many have tried PF cakes 'crumbled' into a bulk sub. I haven't seen a intact cake used in this fashion, it looks clean. Sweet ass sweet:bow:

ok... we have knots! yay! I'm going to wait til tomorrow before I start pasteurizing my casing layer.. heres how the subs looked just a bit ago...
sub 1:

sub 3:

I'm still not 100% sure what exactly is going on with that 3rd upper right hand corner.. But I have a good idea... I think that the cake was, for whatever reason ii.e., used more inoculate than the other cakes because it was the last one and had the inoculate, too far into it's fruiting stage that instead of using the bulk sub as a food source, it just used it as a casing layer... most of the knots are under the bulk "casing"... the bulk sub is colonized there and if you look closely, it looks greyish.. it's just not thick.. I think this is going to be good. :)
there is still some bulk that needs to be colonized, but it's not very much and I figure it'll be done colonizing by the time the first flush is over with. and if not, I'll just scrape it off. :) man, this PE clone rhizo is intense.

I figure why not give you the grand tour.. heres all the bins from above with a 1/4 inch casing made of 70/30 medium course verm to coir.. the casing was pasteurized and layed out thin.. I figure maybe why this works well with applying the casing late might have to do with maximum light exposure to the myc producing many knots.. then applying a casing giving those knots a nice micro environment to develop in.. when applying it to the already fruiting myc, the casing layer colonization is kept to a minimum and allowing breathing of the sub during fruiting.. just a guess tho. :)
sub one after casing... it's very thin..

sub two...

sub three...

I'm really excited.. I have high hopes for this.. I think at the very least it's going to look good. :)
