The recent brew-ha-ha over at the Nook got me thinking along the lines of

SAFE ADDRESSES

Not only are they a REALLY good idea, they are necessary in the barter system so that if (when, actually, cuz it WILL happen eventually) something becomes compromised in transit, it does not mean a ride under the bubblegum lights or worse.

So...The topic is suggestions for acquiring a good, truely safe address, and any method specifically intended to keep shippers and especially receivers from harm.

I would like suggestions of both what works, and what has failed. WE ALL COULD BENEFIT FROM INCREASED PERSONAL SAFETY! This is a brainstorming effort, so please be kind to posters of impractical or insane ideas. We can weed nicely. :D

Let's start with a suggestion I heard in another thread:

Pay a bum to get you a post office box NOT attached to your home address.

a friend is ok too, as long as its not illegal substances. spores/syringes/prints, can all be sent to a buddies house that is no where near a grow op. that way if for some reason the post office gets nosey, and something does happen (god forbid), nothing will be found or happen. choose a friend that has no kids in the house, and if possible is single. always have all boxes marked to RESIDENT and then the address. and tell them to NEVER open the box(tell them to write RETURN TO SENDER on it right away and lay it next to their door, that way all they have to say is, hey i was waiting for tomorrows mail, to send it back). you want them safeguarded as well as you. this is about all i can think of, any other suggestions would be good.

NEVER HAVE ONE TO SIGN FOR!. have anyone not sign...not poss with po but with fed ex etc.you know what your doin. pay the consequences. our laws are unjust. they are the laws of the land. I would explain my beliefs here. too wordy. know what your doing. believe in the things your doing.

I have used my 80 year old grandma's address. Just for prints and syringes no questions asked and she is a tough old lady she wouldnt put up with anything and how hard could some one push a old lady for information. She has a different last name in a different city so there a couple degrees of seperation.

Peace...

a re-mailer is another option.
the mail goes to a firm/service's address first,
is re-mailed unopened by them [placed inside larger pkg.]
to a specified address
known only to the re-mailer.
there are several on the 'net,
many outside usa jurisdiction.
a small fee per piece of mail is usually required

Below are some links that I found in a very short google search for remailer services. They vary in price structure and services…so before doing any of these research all the hidden fees and what they will and won’t do for you. The last link is especially cool in that you are basicly renting a physical box in Vegas and can peek into the box on the net and they are willing to use the bulk mail boxes/envelopes and mail a bunch of stuff to you for actual postage + $2 for each time you have them ship. They will hold indefinitely. I am not specifically suggesting using these links for your Safe Addy…just that there are a ton of remailer sites out there and here are just the first 5 I came across that didn’t look too overpriced.

being a re-mailer
gives one a pretty good cover story
for possession of packages of dubious content...

Thats a great idea, a myco re-mailer. It would definitely have to be someone trustworthy and willing to take the risk of receiving packages.

DEI has a good point about using a friends house where it is safe.

I'm thinking a safe way would be if you know someone whom you trust that has a business or business address you could use. That way they can say they get the wrong mail sent to them all the time or something. Just throwing out ideas.

its good to have trustworthy, understanding; and yet straight edged friends. I would think that there are others that have similar friends and might talk to them about the possibillity of starting their own business remailing stuff for f's and foaf's ect who have security issues....just a thought.....I know I couldn't talk any of my friends into doing such things for more than just me, they're too paranoid, which is why they are straight edged to begin with
