I had some leftover bulk sub from my oyster try, and some PE6 on WBS from slurry- half of which contammed, but these jars looked ok- so I decided WTF? Let's just see.

I put some verm in the bottom, a layer of sub, a layer of spawn, and another layer of sub.

As you can see, one is growing fast. Nice geometric Rhizoidal mycellium. It smells good. The other smells faintly of sour apples and no apparent growth.

Any suggestions?

Usually when you smell the sour apples there is a bacteria present. Sometimes lots of FAE will help with the bacteria issue.
But if it were me, I'd pitch the ones that smell funky and keep going with the one showing growth.

Since I began fanning the funky-smelling tray, it smells less, and now has some mycellium poking out. You can see it in the lower right, almost in the corner. Tonight I'll stick an air pump tube under the saran wrap, and see if even more air helps.

The other one, I believe, is ready to case!

Mr. Chen,

The bulk sub was straw/poo/hardwood sawdust, a leftover from a blue oyster attempt. Next time, more straw, less poo. Not the best mix for cubes, but what the hell? Worth a try.

The bad tray definitely contammed- see photo- and got pitched tonight.

I sprinkled just a light casing of verm on the other one, and misted it. Overnight, it has grown maybe 30% through the verm.

Maybe the casing should be deeper.
