Overwatering IS NOT a matter of concern with baskets if they are watered the amounts recommended in the tek. Around a quart over the course of a day per basket. Mist it on, dont dump it on.

I would scratch the bin all-together and let them fruit in open air.

Patching is not necessary with baskets. Scratching the casing is vital. I always scratched the surface of the casing at the 2 week mark if I remember correctly. Chikarma, you will probably need to scratch way before that mark because of the incredibly high spawn ratio.

if the funky monk scratches and then mists heavily again, wont that just matt the casing layer back down? kinda defeating the purpose?

How thick of a casing layer do you use?
How deep do you scratch?

No it shouldnt. A fair portion of the casing layer that you scratched up should be colonized. This will not allow for the casing to become matted.

Around 1-2 inches for a casing layer. It can work well with any type of casing. Poo is the best for baskets.

Scratch cempletely through the casing layer, down into the substrate. Its OK to pull up a little straw to the surface.

Yes, poo is an exceptional casing layer for baskets. ONLY FIELD MANURE tho. Its even what Visions recommends as the casing layer for them. Id say its the best for baskets.

Manure can even be used on cased bulk subs as the only casing layer. Yes, a casing layer by definition is non-nutritious, but that doesnt mean that poo wont work well. It can be made to work great as seen below.

The same applies to coir casings DEI. Just because a casing layer is nutritious, doesn't mean they won't perform well. These types of casings can be treated just like a staw or field poo casing (UNCASED). When you initiate pinning is up to you. ;)

Straight up horse poo on LBs seems to be working well.

The overseer was tested by his herd over the last two days. She was forced to patch-case a few stragglers back into their confinement. It is not yet time to allow them to roam free.

The casing layer was patched in some spots and recently was scratched and misted again. After the scratching the casing was lightly smoothed out. The casing layer is clumpy because of the excess moisture and maybe some compost/poo being scraped up in it by scratching.

This overseer's eye is humble and untrained and her hopes are in high spirits.

Thank you for experiencing this event with me. Together we may learn from the overseers experiences. The baskets have a will of their own, and the overseer is only there to try to nudge them along.

A glimpse of the baskets and the untamed myc that likes to probe how far they can go before the overseer sees them.

Great lookin baskets Chikarma! I also have a straw/poo laundry basket of cloned PFC's that will be fruiting soon. I'll make sure to post some pics of my results as well.

I'm happy to see you liked my old grow log, but I must tell you that the entire log is not posted, so unfortunately the details of my grow are unclear:
You said earlier:
"In Paradox's thread (http://mycotopia.net...s/5/169730.html) he keeps them in a closed bin and doesnt mist at all until after the first harvest."

I misted everyday from the day of birth, all the way until the first pinset. These guys are right, you wanna get as much water in the baskets as you can so keep misting until you see your first pins. Best of luck to you!

Paradox, It is a pleasure to have you engage in this thread. I was mistaken earlier it seems as i thought you did not mist because the tub was closed creating very low moisture loss. I now know that you misted heavily even with a closed container allowing the excess to drain out if I am not mistaken again.

Thank you for your experience and insight.

The strain is living up to its reputation. Overlay has returned after patching and a scratching. Direct misting has been halted in order to not damage the myc network and the casing is still quite moist. The overseer is at a loss for ideas right now.

Overlay is when the whole casing becomes colonized and matted and it won't absorb moisture... But, the mycelium is normally supposed to poke through some of the casing layer, just not like it does grains or straw... Overlay is bad, but you look fine, no overlay... Just wait, that's all that ya need to do..

Chikarma dont let PR's time delays get you down. The casing layer may seem like its going into overlay but you just have to be patient. The fruits will come, even if they are a week or two later than what you hoped. PR is so unpredictable, it really helps to have a quick fruiting substrain isolated. You'll have a lot of fun once you start to see fruits, PR's look awesome to me. They are so smooth and dense its no wonder they take a while to grow. Not to mention they'll blow you away! O.O
