from what i've been reading
[about mead but principles apply]
the simmering temp of 160*F
would only be needed a few minutes,
honey could be heated up in advance,
shroomage chopped fine / powdered stirred in
simmer ~ 5 minutes at heat
then allow to cool.
if one wanted one could
while still hot enough to flow freely
vacume-filter the honey to get it clear.
you'd want to avoid caramelization at higher temps
as it would turn the honey granular and cloudy.

So the time at simmer should not effect potency?

Yeah, you def have to keep an eye on heating the honey as it will bubble up in no time..
There is a minor problem with getting the honey to drain off the mush completely,even when hot..
I poured a little hot water over the remains and drained into a seperate jar..This jar won't keep though, unless frozen...
Ideally if the mush was extracted into acidified water then evap'd down to a wet sludge fast enough - then that would be the least expensive method of mixing into a honey jar.

Water based teas are the best for the rapid and efficient seperation of goods..If it could be reduced with minimal loss before stirring into the honey - might have something..

Going to try a spoonful from that jar ,we'll see what's up...

Well damn -i'm impressed ...1 level tbsp and have nice strong buzzz going..
This measure is equal to 1 dry gram originally..
I guestimate 75-80% efficiency in transfer to the honey..

Only drawback would be having to eat 3-4 tbsps to get a real triplike dose..
The flavour only had a hint of shroomyness, so would have to be clearly labeled..heh....

I'll let 'er sit in the fridge for a month or two - see if it holds up..

Thnx guys..After having thought about it , you may be able to nearly double the consentration
with the help of a vacuum filter as Hip suggested..
If about 10% of water was added to the honey b4 the dry mush was added, then cooked and filtered, you could use more mush - mebbe 35 grams per 150ml honey water...
The filtered honey could be reduced to it's original density with a bit more heating...

I think i will try the other method though ,where a regular tea is prepped and rapidly reduced, then mixed with honey..
The whole deal should take less than 1 hour and would create a much higher consentration of psilly with no visible particals suspended..
This will be done with the stronger P. Ovoids....

Looks like it's getting close to the point where I'll be ditching my old recipe!

I'd still recommend adding ginkgo biloba, and it's available as a tincture as well as powdered leaf, so it could be added without adding visible particulates to the honey.

If I mix up an ounce of funpowder* it fills a halfpint about 2/3 full if I remember correctly (now I just store it in the cheap plastic "gladware' containers, which a mix fills about halfway). I haven't tried to fill one up with as much as I could fit; I always use exactly one ounce each time so I don't have to do any math to keep the all the ingredients in proportion.

I'd say that's definitely worth a try; probably a lot easier to pull the excess water out of maple syrup with mild heat/ desiccant/ whatever than with honey.

Might could even buy crystalized maple syrup, add a minimal amount of water to begin dissolving it (or possibly none at all), then add chopped up fresh shrooms. They could be chopped in a blender while frozen, or for easier filtering they might be able to be left whole. The maple should draw the water out of the mushrooms and the proportion of maple to fungi could be adjusted until the sugar content is high enough to prevent spoiling. A little citric acid or lemon juice would keep the mix from bluing, which might make the color of the syrup look weird. This concoction could be left as-is for long-term storage or filtered for hitting the road (leaving the candied mushroom chunks at home for munching later).

Looks like another great weekend project or two, and I should have some raw materials to play with soon that I'll use to try some of these ideas out.

I'm really looking forward to the extensive testing these projects will require... :amazed:

Thnx for the info TV...Honey can also be thinned with water then cooked down to any degree of stickyness ,just not sure of the preservative power of Maple syrup ...
Anywho , this extraction is underway for a Saturday night taste treat [hopefully]....

1st pic; 20g of P. Ovoids ,ground and added to 500ml water + tsp vitamin C powder
for acidity...This simmers for 20mins..

2nd pic; Tea is filtered thru a microfine coffee filter and the mush squeezed for max extract...

mmmm, candied mushroom chunks! i was just wondering, have you guys used the vacuume sealers for jars? harbor freight has them this month. 4 lids for widemouth jars and the plunger for $7.99, i dont know where you would buy more lids though. and is this the one that i have heard other people talking about?

Okay..Here's the tea extract boiling down in the frypan for rapid evap'n..
The honey had just been added and the heat lowered..
As the tea was reducing , it also gave off a sweet honey like scent..
This reduction back to the original consistancy of the honey took 30mins, so total heating time was 50mins..
The flexible rubber spatula is really helpfull with all the stirring involved...

2nd pic; Quarterpint jar filled with about 70ml of electric honey :loveeyes:

It did produce a clearer honey [particulate wise] but as the tea was reducing
there was some coagulation forming ..Overall though - i like the looks of it..

So we have 70ml containing a 20 dry gram Ovoid extract equal to 40 grams o' Cubes...
Or a jar full of heat decimated bunk...hmmm..

Only one way to find out , i reckon....:reb:

1 tbsp has the max potential of 1.5g ovoids or 3g Cube equiv...
