I suppose I will have to try both. I did use the rye grass coffee hydration process, but I don't have one for rye berries. Could you post that link? Espically since I did the grass seed one day, then did a karo jar today. Unfortunatley, my rye berries supply is about 3 lbs, and I don't have a source even close by. However, I'm willing to risk most of that stash to get some decent stones, and will buy more rye grass soon. Too bad they don't get larger with container size.

Heres a pic of commercial sclerotia. €15 for 15g (about US$12)
I cored it and it is in sterile water, I will inject some into honey water someday

it is a sclerotia "core". I passed a needle through the stone and injected it into sterile water. A few days later that growth was visible. The jar was shook and there are many strands. I could suck some up and inject into another jar. Hopefully it will survive long term storage like this.

this is very discouraging.....foaf noccd up some jars in july, and they don't look anything like that. some tan/brown, but nothing that could be mistaken for a stone trying to start. what if he spawned to straw? could he get stones then? he used rye berries so it is concievable yes?

Mid/late-december 2005, I made some Mex A pf tek jars from LC injections

One month later, I noticed that this strain likes to make one or two stones, as big as my entire thumb each, in the verm layer of a 250 ml wide mouth jar.

The problem is that as the stones push through the verm, the protection from contams is diminished... a few of the jars got some grey cobweb-like infestation.

But this also means that stones follow the path of least resistance and prefer to grow in loose verm than in compact myc and push against the glass.

I've also noticed that stones in my rye and rice jars seem to have to do a lot of pushing against the substrate in order to grow

Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the substrate "fluffier" while keeping it edible? I think this would increase yield
