So I'm having a bit of a problem with one of my straw logs, its not fully colonized and very dried out, yet it has only yielded a couple fruits. I'm close to losing the log but I figured I would at least give it a chance by dunking it and placing it into a container to fruit in.
Anybody have any suggestions for dunking straw? I havnt been able to find much about dunking straw in particular in the archives so if there is anything I should know, or if you guys have found any links for straw dunking, please tell me. Otherwise I plan on dunking the log in a rubbermaid container for 12-24 hours and then giving it a 30 minute bleach dunk. Thanks guys.

12-24 hours is too long. I'm no log expert, but my straw subs rehydrate fast. An hour or 2 tops. The prob i've heard with logs is that they can fall apart after the dunk. I'm sure that is indeed the case. If I were you, i'd just start misting it heavily with a spray bottle and keep it wrapped loosely in plactic to hold in the moisture. I've got these colonizing and wrapped loosely in plastic, and I haven't had to touch them with a spray bottle yet. They're flyin! These where spawned with 2qts of wbs per VLB tek on the 1st and 2nd of this month. That's 5 days. Another 5-7 or so and they'll be colonized. Make sure after the misting that the plastic is applied were Co2 can escape.

OK, I thought I might have heard something like that so thats why I posted before starting. I'll reduce the dunk time to an hour and then give it a 30 min. bleach dunk. Its ok if it falls apart because I'm going to transfer it to a rubbermaid tub. I need to do some more work on my greenhouse before I store any more logs in there because it is not sealed properly and I was having trouble with gnats. Actually the log I'm dunking is already infested :( So I'm experimenting to see if the bleach dunk can kill the larva I'm sure the gnats have laid inside the substrate.
Nice LB's, I have one growing right now, but unfortunaty lost another one that dried out and got a visit from the big green monster. I've made serious modifcations to my grow setup since my last grow so I'm having a little trouble getting all the kinks worked out.

Yah sure I'll get back to you guys, I'll be keeping a lid on the new fruiting container most of the time so I figure if the eggs are not killed during the dunk I should find some gnats after I move it to the new container.

mmmmmmmmmmm the ol' straw log dunk. I have ventured down that path. Trick is to get the weight on the log pretty evenly, otherwise parts will try to float and that where they break. However it doesnt matter if they break it will still fruit! Go for a rubbermaid, a couple of bricks, some bleach and water and thats it. No sense in doing a plain water dunk and then a bleach dunk. Just do the bleach dunk. Straw doesnt really need too much time to soak up water.
Also, LBs seem to preform best after many tests if you DO NOT cover them in plastic bags whilst they colonize. Throw it on after say 2 weeks. Water like a sumbich to where you think they are drowning (better have holes drilled!) one time a day until the time you throw on the bag. Works better that way. I found scratching the baskets didnt help in any way. Same results as no sratch. I have seen 5 LBs get 1 gallon of water per day. Dont forget 1.5 tblspoon of bleach per gallon of spray water. MMmmmm chemical pump mister is the way to go so much faster and less fatiguing than spray bottles.

i guess I shoulda said perform the best FOR ME after many tests :) It has worked with covered through the run as well, but FOR ME they only contam when they are covered.

oh yea one of em broke in half while doing the dunk. Still fruited.
BTW this is called a hobo dunk from now on. Its hobo-rific.
