well i got a good food dehydrator and i undid the heating element

now my last shit took like six days and it wasnt even cracker dry yet

soooooooooooo

what i did, was, my dehydrator, came wiht plastic trays to dehydrate semi liquids like soups and fruit rolls and shit like that

so every other rack , i put the plastic tray in there and filled it with damp rid, and then i coverd it with the mesh

that way between every rack of shrooms theres racks of damprid

now after the first day your gonna have to change out the damp rid

and i also cover the top hole with like a book or something

So you unhooked the heating element? Was there still a fan or something else operating in there? Cool setup.

I could be wrong, but if there is just a fan blowing air around I would think blocking the top hole with a book or anything would only increase the amount of time it would take to dry anything. That hole is meant as an exhaust for damp air to leave the dehydrator. I would give it a try next time without blocking the top hole and see if you can decrease the time it took to dry your magic.

Leave the heating element, but put the thing on a timer, two hours on, an hour off. You can dry a whole batch overnight.

lucysd reconnect the element to do it in 4 -8 hours at once, I dry mine like that with same dehydrator and there is absolutely no loss of potency, besides the negligible psilyocin turning to psilocybin.

I dried like you did for a while then just gave up. Only true way to get cracker dry, when dealing with bulk, is to use a dehydrator with heat, mine has a dial though, i can go from 90 to 145*F, none of which makes the psily's degrade, except the psilocyn to psilocibyn... man my spelling sux sorry.

when dealing with 1000+ wet grams damprid just isn't an option.

Agreed.
I do like DampRid to finish them off- after I wake up, I pull the dry mushies out of the dehydrator, and give 'em 12 hours or so in the desiccant chamber. 24 to cracker-dry, no problem. Vacuum bag them, put 'em in the freezer.

i remember getting chem burns from sooo much damprid, even through gloves!

having big glass shards u could sword fight with of chunked used spent damprid.

and hideous burns on my hands from it.

but DR t's earlier post about intervals, that's another good way. Especially if you leave the premises and let it run while you're not present..

I can assure you that temps up to 125F are just fine. I measured.

Edit - and based on results of extraction with boiling ethanol, I can say that 150-160F is ok too.

iirc psylocibin doesn't break down until 240-ish degrees F.

ever thought of just throwin them all in a big cardboard box and putting a boxfan or something like over it? ive used this method to dry since i started a few years back and it hasnt let me down yet. usually takes 2-4 days plus theres no heat involved so you wont loose much potency.

There are two things to watch out for; getting the temp high enough to cause thermal breakdown of the psilocybin (which happens over 240℉ as has been pointed out already) or facilitating oxidation with lower heat over time.

Even in a solution, if the psilocybin gets over 240℉ it will break down without oxygen being present. A hot environment (that is below 240℉) speeds up oxidation, so the hotter they are the faster the psilocybin breaks down unless they are in an anaerobic environment (like a tea after the water has boiled which removes all the oxygen). It may be a negligible loss of magic if it's only exposed to hot temps in air for a few days, but how obsessive one is about drying procedures is a matter of personal preference I suppose.

That's pretty much the basis for my recommendation that mushrooms be dried with no supplemental heat; I use a dehumidifier and a fan for a day or two (they are set on window screens used as shelves in a spare room), followed by placing them in a sealed bin with a pan of silica gel. To speed things up a lot I added an aquarium air pump to the bin that moves the air around inside so it works the same way as the Damp-Rid in the dehydrator idea. To make your life easier I suggest switching to silica gel since it's rechargeable in the oven and does not irritate your skin, however take care to not breathe silica gel dust!

i get cracker dry with a box fan, silly!

Luce, you might want to use a dehydrater to start with, for like 2 hours, then move those too a box fan, more some more into the dehydrator, repeat so you can get them all going good

i dont know how much you can fit into a dehydrator
kudos on your haul!!!

somewhere near 245*F i believe is it's point of complete degradation VERY quickly.

seee that works yeah, but how many days? im talking drying thousands of grams wet in a few hours, not days.

actually with the damp rid and dehydrator, im getting dry in like thirty five hours cracker dry, which gives it like zero time to oxidate with no heat

why i dont wanna use the heat for drying even if it dont decrease potency is that, it will begin the decomposition process (or so i think)

and since most of my shit goes into storage its gonna go decline in potency faster than if i had dried without any heat

i dont have a box fan

i have a dehydrator hehhee

I gotta bump the box fan here guys ....

Lucy ... a 20" box fan costs like 10-15 bucks at any dept. store.

Very simple to get a HUGE amount of boomers dried very quickly with NO heat.

Take any tub (I usually use the 18 gal rubbermaids or whatever).

Cut out the bottom of the tub with a knife. Really easy to do, doesnt have to look nice. Get a cheap ass $2 roll of screen and cut pieces off, layer in the tub, screen, shrooms, screen, shrooms, screen, shrooms. Put the tub on two stacks of books (so that the hole in the bottom of the tub is not on the ground) put the box fan on top blowing through the tub and out the bottom.

Nice thing about this is you can put HUGE fruits, as in 8" +++ in there WHOLE without having to break them into pieces or seperate caps from stems or smash them down. Will dry in 2-4 days ... cracker dry.

If your anal you can then just store them in containers with damprid but definately not necessary. I just vacume seal them at that point and throw in the freezer.

Easy, peasy japanesy.

BTW for the record I bought an expensive ass american harvest dehydrator, put a toggle switch on the heating element so I can turn it on or off at will. Guess what .... the fucking box fan blows it away (pun intended).

If you want to get real fancy smancy ... buy a wooden dowl, cut into four 8" legs and poke them in the bottom corners of the rubbermaid tub so it stands on the floor on its own "feet". Put the box fan on top. End of story. No heat, no speculation on loss of potency, and its done completely in 2-4 days depending on ambient humidity.

I gave the dehydrator to my mom for her bday ;)

I see used food dehydrators at Goodwill and other thrift stores all the time. Check your thrift stores before you spend good money on a device you're just going to take apart! Got mine for $4, works like a charm.
