i do both dunk and de case......

usually the de case does well to provide water as a cake needs it, a dunk fills the cake to its desired capacity of water, which is nice......

experiment and have fun

I double end case (invirto), then set 'em on the rocks (for which I am much chastised). Its a lot of work to dunk a bunch of cakes, so I don't do it. I also don't get the mad crazy second and third flushes that a lot of you guys get. Its definitely a trade off.

I remember using the inner-res. TEK the first time I grew cakes. While waiting for those first fruits I religiously topped up the straws. It was a great time killer. Learned that from PF site, he had a few pictures I think.

I've been using paper towels(not toilet paper, too thin) for the humidity. Combined that with limited dunking and I've had results better than using the double end casing tek. Limited dunking means dunking for around 6 to 12 hours only for the second flush and on. With wicking moisture from the paper towels the cakes can easily become water logged with dunking too. Of course as all opinions mine has a variable. This has only been compared with texas strain. Texas seems to pin so well that I'm not sure if other strains would perform equally on a cake without a vermiculite casing. I will say though, shrooms without absolutely no vermiculite or any other substrate on the bottoms are great.

really, there is no point to the poll

not so fast, there buddy.
read it and weep, PF
our poll clearly shows a decided preference for 'my' dunking tek
by more than 2:1 over 'your' DE casing tek.
there's yer 'point'

DEC after birth, then clean and dunk after flush (unless flushes are running together), DEC agian...and I alway put in an inner reservoir when making the cakes in the first place.

Tryed water injection, but it tends to water log my cakes, dunk does too if I over do it.

the doobster dunks and de cases if he has the right verm. :) I hate casing with fine verm. :) Too messy. DE casing your cakes helps yeilds stay high though and the cakes not dry out, and dunking, well, dunking is just great. :) hehe

How many flushes should one get from the typical brf cake?

FOAF had good 1st and 2nd flush, very scrawny 3rd so then they piched them,

They were dunked over night 12+ hours in the fridg each time

assuming we're talking about dunked cakes-
i generally give up after 4,
but some folks have managed to eke out 6-7 flushes.

Before discovering the OMC, I'd been using the huge-gauge needles from a turkey marinade injector syringe to stab the cake and shoot water in until it shot out the sides. A pint cake could take a max of 20 mL of water, but it usually sprayed out the sides after 5-10 mL. I could also hold the cake up in the air while shooting it, sort of a handle that allowed me to examine the entire cake closely without actually touching it (stab wound notwithstanding). I used a 60cc syringe to avoid constant refilling with fresh water.

I averaged 4 flushes per cake, with between 6 and 9.8 grams dry weight harvest total each. Not bad results to get with no help beyond the original PF Tek instructions (which I added a few things to over time). Now I DEC and just add fresh water to the small amount of hydrogel mixed into the verm, which is easier. Yield has remained about the same. I'm trying two jars now with a layer of verm and hydrogel on the bottom, added before PC'ing, to see if I can have a colonized casing in place at birth, just for fun.
