"rez-effect" is common Aussie hort/hydro slang for increasing the reservoir effect (water holding properties) in a medium, be that water-crystals to a soiless potting mix or peat or compost to a sandy soil of a veggie/ornamental garden.

In mushrooms, because they're 90%+ water by weight, then to increase the total-water-hold of the media has to be of benefit.

In short, what I put forward here is a crude rip-off of the PF tek media methodology (but using millet with vermiculite), so it's certainly nothing new.

Without ado...

Method: (Set for the green 3.3lt volume tray).

Inoculate 500 grams of millet any way you please. In my case a liquid mycelium solution.

Get your materials together.
Note: I won't bother going into what's needed in casing grain or I'll bore people no end. If you don't know, go hit the FAQ.

Sub-base layer of pre-sterilised 60/40 to base of the tray 2/3" deep. Make sure it's laid in level. I scraped it back to expose base for the pic.

Mix 2 parts colonised millet to 1 part pre-sterilised field capacity vermiculite.

Break up the clumps with a spoon. Your mix will look like this.

Spoon this mix to one side of the tray so there's room for the 2nd batch of mix to the other end. I like to keep what could be two colonies separate.

You will end up with it looking similar to this.

Even it out like you would if paving but don't compress it.

Finish off 1/2" deep pre-sterilised 60/40.

Note: the ^above pics are taken from two trays done later in similar fashion.

Wet Weight (744 grams)...

Dry Weight (59 grams)...

Conclusion, largest 1st flush for me to date on this style of tray due to "rez-effect".

The problem however was the tray lacked a 25% coverage on one end because it went 'direct-to-the-fruiting-chamber'. Meaning, the result could have been better.

At risk of repeating, this tray like others I have done past were placed 'direct-to-the-fruiting-chamber', as shown in my last grow log.

This problem is easy to see in the following tray shown (below). It's another tray done with "rez-effect" as detailed ^above in the method and it too was on 1st flush, but it was a 'direct-to-the-fruiting-chamber' tray. Note how much of the tray didn't fruit.



Now a trip back in time to some observations I made in July this year.

Here's some old shots (in series) of colonised wbs mixed 2 parts to 1 parts field capacity pre-sterilised vermiculite in a microwave.

Mixed together in the tray itself.

24hrs later it "mends", as I didn't know if this would work? So I chose not to case and simply observe.

It was aluminium foil covered and incubated (30C) and patched to get a 15% mycelium casing break-through.







...and another ice cream tray done the same way. The weight of this one was shy of the ^above tray, but it was still fuller in pin-set than if it went 'direct-to-the-fruiting-chamber'.




Basically, incubation & coverage gives a better pin-set and canopy cover than a tray that goes 'direct-to-the-fruiting-chamber'.
I think we all know this

Now what was of interest is the wet weight 1st flush of 372 grams off 250 grams millet as per the 1lt ice cream container, due to "rez-effect" & incubation.

So, I decided enough of this 'direct-to-the-fruiting-chamber' caper and try a combo of "rez-effect" & incubation, to see if I can get a better 1st flush result.

I have two trays in incubation at the moment. Foil removed off one tray for the pic. I'll continue this thread as it happens.

What about between flushes? Pick off the fruits and dunk it for 6hrs underwater with a brick (I've been banned from using the kitchen sink lol).
