My past grow have all went really well, so thank all of ya'll!!

I have a 73qt pink bin I would like to be my monotube. It is 19inches longways, 12 1/2 inches across and 15inches tall.

Is this too large?

I have done alot of reading but still have some questions. One is is how much poo/verm will I need to get it fill upto the 4 inch mark?

Where exactly should I put the holes to fill in with polyfill and how large a hole?

I have pics of it just know cable to upload them, but you get the idea!

I will be using BRF jars as spawn as I dont have a Pressure Cooker.

Thanks for any help!!:smokin:

If I did my math right 4 to 5 inches should be 18 to 19 quarts of substrate.Your holes should be just above your sub and as far as how many and how big is something your going to have to play with.If your planning on casing than stick a hygrometer in there and try to get around 70% by opening up or closing holes

hmmm, as for volume... a 4" high substrate would be 4" x 19" x 12.5" = 950 cubic inches. according to google, 1 cup = 14.4375 cubic inches, so that's 66 cups. that would be total volume including the spawn, mind you... so if you spawned at 1:3 spawn:sub, you'd want 75% of the final volume to be substrate, so 49 cups of substrate (about 24.5 pints) and 17 cups of spawn (about 8.5 pints).

woot!

i dont think there's such a thing as "too large".. as long as there are enough nutes in the substrate i think it would be fine

holes should be near the level of the substrate.. maybe an inch up from it. CO2 is heavy and it settles so you want them to be near the surface. i use 1/4"-3/8" holes.

good luck!

also if your using brf for spawn then try using a blender. It's a little labor intensive but look how it turn the cakes into dust

I do tubs almost this same size, a little bigger. I think you will find the best way to go for maximizing the tubs is a 2 or 3" substrate. I have done 6" and 2.5" and found the difference to be minimal except being able to make 2 times as many!

For this size tub it would take about 3.5 gallons to fill it to 4" and about 2.5 gallons to fill it to 2.5" mark, all approximate. You can measure this easily with a 5 gallon bucket by eye.

I have been experimenting with no poly filled holes, but very small 1/8" holes wide open no filter. Only 4 holes just above substrate level, 2 on each long side. There is also a drain hole drilled for easy dunking. So far the test has gone perfectly with 100% colonization now I am waiting on fruits. There has been no dehydration so it should finish without a hitch.

I use brf as spawn too, its dandy.

Here is what I have written up so far if you are interested:

Thanks guys for the quick help, that really helped me!

So If I bought the doo/bags from hip - His are 2 gallons which equals 8quarts and yall say I need 18 or so quarts. correct?

So then I would need 2 and 1/2 bags of his poo/straw, correct?
That would some to over $70

So im thinkin then to just go find a horse stable and get it for free and pasteurize it my self. Agreed?

Edit- Damn Sandman, thanks alot for all of thought, it sure does help to visualize it. So your saying 2.5 gallons of poo/straw would fill it up 2.5 inches? In my head that doesnt seem enough to fill it up 2.5 inches but you know better than I.

Abouth how many pf jars do you use as spawn for this amoutn?

Thanks again!

well I use half of the pictured spawn bag which I would estimate to be about 6-8 standard half pint pf jars.

2.5 gal in that tub plus your spawn and you'll be golden!

Awesome sandman!

That is exactly what I wanted to hear!!

Lookin forward to my prints in the mail in the next couple days to get things rolling.

I have never got and pasterized my poo before. Any hints or points in the right direction? How long does the whole process take once I get the poo home?

Ya'll are the shit!!:headbang:

Edit- Off to donate plasma....

Search craigslist for manure. Find a good source that keeps a pile of mainly manure or all manure if possible. Your best bet is some rich lady with like 5 horses, she will keep a pile of manure in the pasture seperate from the bedding/manure mix in the stables pile hopefully. Call around, pray to buddah and wear your lucky red hat when you start searching. The pile will hopefuly be nicely aged and perpetual so you can come back every so often.

Take it home in heavy duty garbage bags, and dump them out into your own pile . You can shred them with a top loading wood chipper if you have one, or if you are just doing a small pile then you can shred it some other way. Shredded dry poo can be stored in dry conditions in burlap bags. If you just leave your pile outside then it never fails that it will rain the day before you need to use it making it hard to shred.

I thought you couldn't donate plasma if your a smoker, I assume you are. Obviously I'm wrong in some way, is it just that you can't donate blood if your urine is dirty?

Back on topic though. I just load my poo into jars or turkey oven bags (I prefer quart jars since you don't need to weigh them down), and then put them in a large pot (I use my pc) without the lid. Let the water come to a boil for 5 minutes then turn the heat off. Now put the lid on and let it si for 90 minutes.

This is not my technique and I take no credit for it, it was found on these boards so I'm not really sure who's it originally was though. Good luck I'm on my first monotub too, although have had much success with smaller but incremental cased subs.

I searched craiglist but nothin around here but I do know where some people have a couple of horses 10 minutes from here. So what I want is dry poo correct? Dont I have to leach it somehow?

You can donate plasma and blood, doesnt matter if you smoke cannabis. And they pay you for the plasma, but it was closed today

Just remebered their is a mini horse farm 5 minutes from my house. SCORE!!

So what I am looking for is a pile that hopefully isnt in stable? How do I know if I need to spray it down to leach it? What does leaching entail actually?

Thanks for all the help!

I'm not to sure beacause I've never worked with manure before but I think it means just letting it sit in the sun for a few days make sure no urine is present.Someone with some experience will probably chime in here in a little while though

I'm not really that experienced, but I played with some shit before and meanman420 is right about leaching.
Most stables (ones that take care of the horses) will pile the shit up away from the stables. You want the white aged dried out poo, but if you can only get fresh just leach it.
Leaching is just sitting it outside on a trash bag, tarp or anything really; this is so the poo can evaporate all the ammonia in the urine.
here is a link to reallly simplify the whole process from the vaults. I know your doing a mono, but this could be adapted VERY easily since your using cakes as spawn.
Anyway here is the link http://archives.myco...html?1053729855

Thanks guys, just drove past the mini horse farm and there was a huge pile out away from the stables, looked like dirt but I am asumming its poo. So it looks like i will have more than enough, I will try to take some pics when I go up there.

On a bad note, Im pretty sure I bombed my paramedic certification exam.

Another question ,.....
What should I add to my poo if anything? Verm? Straw? And how to I go about shredding the poo? I do not have a wood chipper.

I am now planning on doing 2 37qt monotubs.

I have 28 BRF jars sterilizing as I type.

Thanks for any help!

Anybody?

Got 27 BRF jars sterilized today, just need my prints in the mail tomm.

Another question. I believe I want to add straw to the poo to make it more airy, where would I get it? Is there someplace that sells it already chopped up and in a bag?

Or should I just use straight poo?

Or just add coco coir?

Or just add verm?

Thanks for all the help!!

Just use the HPoo (50/50) w/Coir. Easiest w/best results. I just did a (30/30/40) Mini Dub of Coir/Spent Coffee Grinds/HPoo. I have never worked w/spent grinds but they are free and you learn more by playing around.

I always use my poo mixed with coir and verm. 60/20/20 poo/verm/coir. I shred the poo with my gloved hands. And wear a mask unless you want to breath in poo dust and snot out poo buggers. Also when I shred my poo there is straw in the poo, so poo alone could work.
