Hey everybody,

Ive got a few large bags of yellow popcorn, I'd like to use it. Could I simply fill a bunch of pint Jars halfway with the popcorn and the right amount of water, and PC for an hour or so, and then inject spores? I remember reading that corn takes a little extra effort to pasteurize properly, But could this simple method work? Please give me your insight...

THANKS

Popcorn needs to be properly hydrated before it is PCed for sterilization.
Pasturizing popcorn will not cut it.Popcorn contams very easily.
I was a big popcorn proponent for years but now I have totally stopped useing it in favor of rye grain.

Grains tend to take longer to PC than an hour.
maybe try doin em for 90 minutes or so.
Then theres alway the pre-soak, to get water capacity right. Ttheres some excellent info in the vaults i just tend to lack linking abilities. Technology.:gah:

You really need to either do a soak and simmer or at least a simmer before draining and loading your jars to get the water content right. The water should be inside of the grains, not just in the jars. Check out the popcorn section of the vaults, good stuff.

rye grain is my choice, popcorn will work, but 90% of popcorn users report success, up until they report greenmold, some reason if popcorn is just SLIGHTLY OFF and isn't either moist en ough, or pc'd long enough, it goes south quick..

a pressure cooker full of rye grain, 16 full pin ts, takes me 1 hour and 15 minutes to PC to perfection, any more then that, you're COOKING the grains even further, and they don't have as many goodies left.

endospore soaks are just bunk in my opinion.

I find soaking is essential for softening and swelling the grain.

I soak both popcorn and rye for 24 to 36 hrs then simmer underwater in a deep pot until the grain is fully swollen but not burst, rinse and pc for 60 min

popcorn seems to burst anyway but I have still had good colonization
I prefer winter rye seed but popcorn can work very well also
IME popcorn can colonize very fast

I've seen much better resuls with WBS even if the process of separateing sunflower seeds and repeated rinseing, it pays off in time frame, but I havn't tried out Rye Berries or Grass Seed.

I use popcorn mostly for my bulk sub's. All I do is add 1 cup per Qt jar( that is just about 3/4 of a full jar) into the PC, add double the water over the popcorn. PC for about 80 min's. Once done, strain and wash under warm water a few times til not sticky. Towel dry load into jars and PC for 60 min's and inject..

quick question

when using grains Would it be wise to put some micro pore tape over the jars because of all the air space in the jars and the lack of a verm barrier???? And if so could you put it on before you PC???

THANKS

Fahtster's steps seem to have awesome results.
Lets see what happens after I shot the jars up....

You could if you think they are drying out to fast, but really no need. With grains the thing is the myc. runs though so fast, the bad stuff does not have time to get hold.
