There are plenty of greenhouses/garden centers in my area and i try and make it to most of them at least every other week or so to check out whats new and make sure i dont miss anything cool.

Some of the larger ones keep lots of large pedros (3 ft is the smallest you'll see) and they mark em up a shit load. I even asked if they get smaller ones ever and the lady gave me a nasty look and explained they contain drugs so they are marked up on purpose to deter punks like me from buying them.

Well one of the cooler ones closer to me usually has a good selection of smaller specimens but i have yet to even see a pedro at his place. I dropped in yesterday and about half way threw my walkthru a bridgesii screamed at me. I had no cash on me so i took it up front and put it on hold.

I picked it up this morning, and found out it was a damn good thing i put it on hold. cause some old dude looking for a phallic looking cacti came in asking for it. Well on the way home i had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting some idiot that walked out in front of my car and the cacti toppled off the seat and the tag fell out. I had never lifted it enough to see the "var mon" at the bottom.

Made my day!!!... heres a few pics

Yeah. it was funny but at the same time it pissed me off. she doesn't know who i am. I told her i can get em for 1/5th the price online and haven't been back to that greenhouse too much, its kinda out of the way anyhow...

on another note, has anyone experimented with the potency of monstrose? from what i've read it seems like its stronger than regular bridgesii (which is more potent than most other trichs, correct?).

From what i have read and from my expereince with cacti, They are supposed to be the strongest with all things being equal of all the cacti aside from Loph williamsii and they are very rare. Great fucking local find man Congrats on that bro. Very very nice.:headbang::eusa_danc:greenboun:cacti::cacti::cacti::cacti:

There are 2 types of monstrose var. clones of the Bridesii. A clone which is a columnar plant. It wont pup unless its from an areole. I dont own any of those, and I think that is what you have. The B clone i have have a couple of, they are the clumping variety. The A clone is harder to come by ime.

This is a bridgesii i got in a trade a while ago. can you tell if its the other clone at this size? or are they the same? it hasn't grown since i got it like the rest of the cacti i got at the same time. it had 1 reasonable 2 inch long root when i planted it. seems like its in there pretty firm now but no top growth.

i wasn't told this was a monstrose but after looking at pics im pretty sure it is.

Clone as in a cutting ?

Clone A

Trichocereus bridgesii forma mostruosa "inermis"
Clone A (The short joined type)
"The penis cactus"

Family: Cactaceae (Cactus Family)

Scientific name: Echinopsis bridgesii forma mostruosa inermis (Clone A The short joined type)

Origin: Garden origin (Nursery produced cultivar)
Conservation status: Listed in CITES appendix 2.
Common Name: Some people call this plant the "Penis plant" or "San Pedro penis", it is also sometimes described as "The Pornographic Cactus’ or the "The More Sensual of Cacti". The German name for this cultivar "Frauenglück" is more poetic than its English equivalent; it translates as "Women's Pleasure".

Synonyms: Echinopsis lageniformis forma mostruosa inermis

Description: This is the clone A (The short jointed one), one of the two Montrose form o T.bridgesii It is a clustering monstrous cactus with prostrate growth habit that branches at the base and can slowly grow up to 25 (-40) cm tall.

Stem: Composed by short upright sections that branches avidly up to 10-15 (-20) cm tall by 5 cm in diameter, light glaucous green, with only a few areoles and spines in the basal portion. The upper part of the stem is cylindrical, smooth without areoles and resemble a penis. The lower part is spiny and shows a tendency to form ribs.

Spines: Honey-coloured to brown, located on the few basal nodes in groups of up to 4. They can grow up to 4–7 cm long.

Flowers: Not known..

The chemical composition of the 'Penis Plant' is supposedly the same as that of the typical T.bridgesii.

There exist several mutant varieties of this T.bridgesii that are highly prized by cactus impassioned. These include a cristate variety, two variants of monstrose growth (Clones A and clones B), Of the monstrose varieties, one (Clone B) is often known by the name Penis Plant.

Two more recently developed clones are now available, the fist of which exhibits both monstrose and cristate growth whilst the second shows both monstrose and variegated growth.

Cultivation: Itis very easy to grow and cold hardy as low as -12°C (or less). Need a fertile, well drained soil mix. Water the plants well and allow them to dry before watering again. This cultivar seems to do better with a little more water than most cacti. In fact, its cultivation requirements are really more like 'normal' plants than most other cacti. During the growing season fertilize them monthly with a balanced fertilizer

Sun Exposure: Outside full sun, but during hot summers, the cactus are subject to sun burning, so grow them in light shade, inside needs bright light, and some direct sun.. During winter month, put them in a cool luminous place and encourage them to enter winter dormancy by withholding water and fertiliser over the winter as they will etiolate, or become thin, due to lower levels of light. They are susceptible to fungal diseases if overwatered, but are not nearly as sensitive as many other cacti, especially in warm weather. They tend characteristically towards black rotted spots unless watering is moderate and only in hot weather, if kept damp through cold periods, they will invariably suffer.

Propagation: It can easily be multiplied from cutting. Single sections are taken off, dried and rooted.

MAJOR SCORE!!!!

I found a crestate monstrose today. I had no cash on me but i put the specimen on hold. I should be able to pick it up and get pics tomorrow. Thing is pretty cool looking!

so looks like i'll have 3 of the 4 monstrose varieties. just need to spot a variagated

i found the newest one at the same location i found the one that started this thread. glad i keep checking back. The owner doesn't even know what they are as i had asked him to call me (personal acquaintance) if he got anymore. since this one didn't look like a penis he was lost.

I dont get how these could be clones.
I under stand some will be.
I own a crested bridgesii, and every now and again it throws off a penis that i remove and it only ever grows more of the clustering var.
