thanks all for the kind words!!!! :teeth: i know the pins are listening and now they want to grow big and strong for ya!!!

hey bev since you're loving it so much i'll post daily picture updates for you ;)

this is open air holes ladies and gentlemen, no polyfil or micropore, open 1/8th inch holes.

well, now that it's colonized, i have been opening it up a once or twice a day to check on the pins, so it IS getting more FAE than that. ;) but yeah, i'm very surprised how well the no-hole-filtering thing turned out, especially when recolonizing the substrate.

thanks everyone again for the positive vibes :)

here's the daily update for bev :teeth:

in the last pic you can see there's a small section in the corner that isn't pinning much. i scraped it oh so gently with a IPA-swabbed fork yesterday, hopefully that helps it some.

ok, the pinset is looking good (first 4 pics), but WTF IS THIS TUMOR-LIKE GROWTH ON THE CAPS??? close ups are in the last 3 pictures. it's showing up on about 1/4 of the pins.. this myc was g2g'd from last grow, and i didn't see any of this on my last grow. it was multispore so it is possible that the jar of grain i g2g'd from did have some sort of mutation....

i have not been spraying with anything (lysol, oust, etc). IPA was used on the utensils before spawning but they were allowed to dry before use (i.e. no liquid IPA on the utensils). i cleaned out the tub with diluted bleach before use, but i also rinsed it with hot water about 3 times until there was no bleach smell. i did not clean the trash bag with anything, which is what the substrate is sitting directly on top of. the tub is getting fanned about 1x per day (except yesterday, i was sick and fell asleep right after work), and getting FAE through the tub holes via fan in the room.... please help, i've never seen this before. :(

That's one badass tub, MD. I think that is the beginnings of rosecomb, but don't quote me on that.

Could be from bacteria or a fungal contaminant. Would not worry bout it too much cause that is a kick ass tub!

hmmm, i don't think it's rosecomb. i've had rosecomb before and it didn't start like this. this is much more like a bulbous growth coming out of the cap than the cap inverting like in rosecomb. maybe it's another stem growing out of the cap??? i have seen that in pics before, but i don't know why it would be happening to so many of the pins.

so even if it's some sort of contamination, it's still ok to eat these?

thanks man :) i'm a little disturbed about these weird growths on the caps, but other than that i'm pretty happy with the tub.

it's not pinning very much around the edges. not sure why. i scraped the non-pinning areas a few days ago but it hasn't really had any effect. i also taped up the edges of the trash bag, in case that hanging over the substrate is preventing pinning for some reason...

oh yeah and the crack healed itself back together. you can't even really see it anymore (pic below).

i kinda had something like that on my shrooms before.. i think it came off pretty easy.. its nothing to really worry about.. just some weird looking stuff on some caps..
in the part thats not growing well, there r no signs of contamination?

amazing freakin tub! will get back at this after the holidays! cant wait to see how it turns out too! have a merry xmas with those PESAs darling! :nunchuck:

thanks for the tips vinz  do you think i should pull the weird growths off now, or wait til after harvest?

and no, i don't see any signs of contams. it's not really overlaid either in those parts. any ideas on how to get it to pin besides scraping?

Personally, I would not worry about it. More pins does not always mean more mushrooms in my experience. Nice grow. :)

i have empirically determined the weird growths to be composed of cubensis tissue!

i removed the growth from one of the pins:

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1230151639

note the blueing on the pin where it was cut.

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1230151639

i then bisected the growth, which was same in texture as a mushroom. it was white in the center but blued within seconds.

http://mycotopia.net...=1&d=1230151639

thus, i conclude that the growth is not a foreign fungus which has attached itself to the pins. it is an extension of the pin itself. however, the cause of this mutation is still unknown; it may be genetic or caused by some agent in the vicinity (though what, i cannot say, for i have not been using any agents). perhaps the fruits have become infected with a virus or bacteria which cause them to grow like this.

do you think these fruits are still safe to eat once matured, harvested, and the growths are removed?
