I have about 1 acre of land that has various weeds some soft stemmed and lots of poison oak and black berry's. I Would like to kill everything and eventually plant something that is low upkeep.

The area is on a hillside the soil is poor and has a lot of clay to it. I am thinking of adding gypsum and other organic matter to aide this. I was also thinking about a cover crop for the winter. To prevent erosion.
BTW I am in the PNW.

I had also toyed with burning the area this fall... but not sure how well that might work.

I am trying to do this a cheaply as possible but realize there will be expenses.:horse:

So......

What spray should I use to kill off the problem plants?

Any advice on a cover crop or eventual plant/grass to grow on the area?

blackberries sell @ $4 a quart.
i would not kill them,
spraying poison on my land.

a few goats to browse the hill
would do a nice job of keeping under control.
and they fertilize the soil as they browse.

You definitely don't want to burn poison oak- if you inhale it you will be sorry, and the urushiol will be spread all over from the smoke.

Years ago I bought a product that was an enzyme- you spray it on clay or hard soil and it softens it in a year or two- it really works! For the life of me though, I can't remember the name. It was in Mother Earth News...

Come to think of it- I could use some here!
