The truffle endevour.

Iam so friggin happy its out of this world. Today Bodza found her first truffle. We found the most enchanting forest ever just a few miles from town.
We hiked around, trained bodza by hiding mushrooms and letting her find them which she is doing really well now. The other day I forgot where I hid a few truffles and she had no problem finding them :D
So anyhow we hiked around this beautifull place and it just seemed perfect for truffles, so we kept commanding bodza to find the truffles.
Long story short at some point I started taking pics of hypholoma clusters. In the meantime Ms. Kocos decided to command bodza again and lead her around the little valley we were in.
Iam knealing in the dirt, trying to take a good picture when Ms. Kocos asks me if I could take a look at something bodza found. I was thinking its probably a root or an akorn or somthing. Well it turned out to be a Tuber excavatum.
Tuber excavatum is a close relative to the summer truffle T. aestivum (what we are out after) They share a simillar smell hence dogs finding them easily. They are a good edible, tasting a bit like hazelnuts and sharing the same fragrance just not as strong as T. aestivum.
Their size ranges between 1-5 cmm the bigest one found in hungary was 60 grams.
Here is a Pictorial of this wonderfull day. And hopefully the begining of our truffle endevours!
Most of the pictures are the courtesy of Ms. Kocos! :)
So this is the enchanting little hill we found, just this knob in the forest, completly covered with a thick, green layer of moss. Gnarly trees protruding from this green pillow and a wide variety of mushrooms.

So this is where things get interesting. As I mentioned above I was photographing these hypholomas when the incident occured :headbang:

And then! This is actually the honor of Ms. Kocos as it was she that coaxed the dog into finding the first truffle :)

I gave the dog a big lump of cheeze as a reward!

Its amazing she even found these tiny ones! Especially considering these hardly smell at all compared to T. aeastivum the mushroom Iam training her with. She is going to be one hell of a hunter!!

You are gonna have to slow down bro I can't rep you again yet every time I turn on my computer you're there with an archive worthy thread or a selection of POTM nominations or just some of the greatest wild myco porn I've ever seen. Half of your pics are clearer and better than some of the field guides I use when I go on a foray.

Thank you taliesin, your compliments made my day  Iam so happy you like my "work". Much luv!
I wish there was a way to train girlfriends to find mushrooms. Id have my girlfriend down sniffing around too but no way it would be as cool as ur dog man. Good vibes :amazed:
Lol now that would be something wouldnt it. Cant really imagine Ms. Kocos crawling around an all fours in the dirt sniffing around at command  It would be nice though... hell if I could smell them out I would be on all fours too :D
That omlet looks super good man!!! I like morel and egg sandwiches meself....I wish I could hunt em here...last time I found some was at whole foods friday for $30/lb..think I'm gonna get a few for steak tonight.
Thanks bro, you guys should have smelled it. Morels are my other favorite edible. Shame they only grow in the spring... Bon apetite to your steak man!
that's awesome, kocos!

I know :) We have come a long way since then. She has been with us for about 10 months now, feels more like 10 years. She is part of the family, the whole neighbourhood loves her including all my friends. She was a great investment and has since turned into a wonderfull companion and a good hunter. Lets hope ill have many more truffle adventures to share this year!
Iam going out again today, before leaving to the körös again. We shall see if we can dig up anything interesting :)
